F30 328i Timing Chain

Hi all

Considering doing the timing chain and guides on my car as preventative maintenance. I wanted to see if anyone has done this out of plan and who is the best to get in done in Joburg?

My car is on 98k km and out of plan now.

Reading up on the issue seems to be mixed views in my opinion.

Hi bud

Would be a good idea to have it done.

Hopefully the Jhb guys can refer you to a good workshop.

I know for the parts you can chat to ABM and mention that you are a fanatic for great discounts.

Good luck!

I got an indicative quote from TuneTech. R27k if they do not have to change bearings. The quote includes for inspection of big end bearings as well and oil pump.

Need to do more research before I decide what to do. The cost just seems a bit excessive at the minute.

Watched some DIY videos and may just decided to do a DIY if I can get the timing tool. Cost for the parts (chain, guides, tensioner) is R6k before ABM discount.

Damn sorry bud...good luck with the repair!

Not really a repair - he mentioned preventative maintenance.
At a bill of 27k i wouldnt do it - that sounds like the price for a repair.

This is thought exactly. Got a quote from ABM which is much more palatable.

Will get a professional assessment before I pull the trigger.

What was the ABM quote all-in for the same work? At R27k, I would not do it unless there is something wrong with the chain.

IMO if you plan on keeping the car and want peace of mind, have it done elsewhere (R6k for parts isn't bad, when you factor in the cost of an engine rebuild) and then keep oil changes to every 8k or so. From chats with my mech, the retarded CBS intervals lead to sludge build up which affect the chain and associated components.

The ABM quote only excludes checking big end bearings. I want to keep the car for a while still hence considering this.
Next step for me is to do a final assessment and determine if I need to do it now or later.

Thats surprisingly not bad, I called BMW Centurion for a quote, they said it would cost approx. 24k , Also considering doing it as preventative maintenance. Is the 17k after the fanatics discount?

Yeah the quote includes fanatics discount. Not too bad a price I reckon for the amount of work involved.

Yes that includes the fanatics discount. Not a bad price for the work involved. Watched a few more DIY videos last night. Not something I would want to take on.

I agree, thank you for the information.

I could be wrong but from what I remember if BMW does the work on the timing chain, you get a 2 year unlimited km warranty on the parts and work done.

I think its worth it if you intend on driving the car for a long time, I just clocked 100k kms on my f30, I'm probably going to get this done at ABM.
