F30 320i advice

Hey OP, we have similar cars. Mines also a 2013, I think manufactured late 2012. No engine troubles with mine what so ever (owned it for 6 months) and nothing regarding engine troubles in the cars history. I wouldn't be too worried.
Also, it seems like you have a bit of confusion. So your DRLs (Daylight running lights) are the rings that stay on all the time. They're awesome and never go off unless you set it that way in the idrive. Leave them on, it's a big part of what defines these cars. Your Xenon lights are actually the headlights. Leave it on auto, and you never have to think twice about them.

Enjoy the ride

Hey man, thanks for the post! Can you do me a favour and post a pic of the day time running lights? Does your car have Xenons too?

When the dealer put the Xenons on they had a blueish ring/circles. Is that not the Xenons?

The rings are the DRL, angle eyes as we refer to them, and the xenon light is the headlight itself like a normal car has headlights. 2 different things

So what it typically means if your BMW has Xenons, is that it has the angel eyes (rings in the headlights) that are a white-ish colour (some tint bluer than others, depends on the bulb), AND the headlights that go on when its dark are the actual Xenons.
A BMW without "Xenons" Has halogens bulbs which are yellow-ish and the DRL's arent the rings, but just smaller bulbs that are always on.

So there in my pic.. the rings are the DRLS. the headlights are bulbs inside the rings that are Xenons. The lights are all off in this picture. hopefully you understand it now

Can you put the xenons on? :)

Sorry I thought the halogen lights were the yellow looking lights. I didn't know the rings lighting up were the drls not the xenons. Colour me confused.

I love the rings. so that's part of the angel eyes. Makes the car look so
Much nicer than just ordinary halogen lights

Have you extended your motor plan yet? What is the mileage?

Wow, okay. Takes balls I guess. :D

Couldn't one also argue then that even 2014 models could also have oil pump failures within motor plan?

Buying a newer model doesn't guarantee anything right? Big failures can still happen the risk is just reduced.

Just trying to rationalize things.

ColdFusion is correct! I opted for a different strategy.. The car was in plan when I bought it, so I had everything checked out. And then instead of extending or getting an external warranty, I decided to put a lump sum of money aside for "worst-case-scenarios" That will grow interest in a bank account instead. If nothing goes wrong with the car, then I come out on top having not wasted money on a plan. If something does go wrong I'm still covered.

Keep in mind that I just did this because its a financially viable option for me. It might not suit your particular needs - I will admit that being in plan still gave me more peace of mind.

The way I would look at it is that the car is under plan, you have the opportunity to get BMW to check and possibly replace the oil pump or any other issue that comes up.

The time under plan will tell you whether you have a lemon or not.

I appreciate your comments. It's possible the car nay never give me serious engine trouble. But like anything there is never any guarantee.

I think I'm going to extend for 1 year and then just put some money away in case something needs fixing or replacing. If I don't do this then I'll probably never buy another BMW thinking that something major will blow unless I buy a 2015 model which is wayyyy above my budget.

Let me show you what my current experience with an F30 320i is , This is not our LCI F30 , this is a close friend of mines car , Its a 2012 F30 320i with about 82000kms on it , the motorplan is coming to an and , In fact it probably has ended by now . Just before the plan ended , my friend took the car in for 1 a service , and 2 a checkup and possibility of extending his motorplan . I had told him to ask them to check on the funny sort of noise that the car makes and in my opinion lack or power and higher then normal fuel consumption.

When the car went in for the service , they found a leak so told him that he should bring it back , so the car was booked in again . He took it back and the car hasnt returned since . Its been over Two weeks now . This is what they found after opening the engine .

This was a properly looked after , 100% dealer serviced car , using only dealer oil and adhering to all service schedules . I had never seen an engine so sludge up before .
I think this has to do with the very long service intervals . So before your car goes off plan , make sure you check for this.

So before motor plan expires I must look out for engine sludge?

So what you are saying is that maybe I should have my car diagnosed what, like every few thousand km? Just to be safe?

Can't say I'm too surprised by all that sludge. Turbo cars only having oil changes every 25k km..........

With 30 000km service intervals all BMW engines will look like that internally. It's as if BMW are doing it on purpose to force you into a new car every 3-5years. Dirty marketing.

No, i would say, do it once, then maintain it thereafter.

Reduce service interval, and depending how bad the engine was at the beginning will determine how many times you need to reduce sludge build up.

There's the problem, right there.

What are you saying? Are you suggesting taking the car to the dealer for servicing is not in ones best interest?

Please explain.
