F30 320i advice

My 2 cents on the consumption.. as mine has the same engine as the F30 320i, open road is decent.
In traffic conditions its very thirsty, probably more than most other stock 1.9/2.0 litres.

If fuel consumption is one of the deciding factors, 320d is worth test driving even if u not a fan of diesel... a cousin bhought one recently, over 1000kms to a tank.

Thanks for your comments.

As far as performance goes how will this car compare against polo gti or golf gti? Will it be embarrassed utterly?

Polo GTI 1.4 tsi - fairly close dice.
Polo GTI 1.8 tsi and Golf GTI - Embarrassed.

A F30 320d keeps above mentioned cars sonewhat honest at robot to robot dices, but I honestly don't see a 320i matching up. The diesel gets off the line very well, so that counts in it's favour when dicing in town. Up to 70-80km/h the 320d is pretty damn quick.

Doesn't the 320i have the same acceleration figures?

I have driven in the E90 and can confirm that the F30 is much more comfortable, way more quicker and noticeably lighter on fuel.

Hey,

I'm probably going to keep this car for another 5-7 years. Going for my test drive next week. It is a non-M white 320i with low mileage. The M-sport models are just too expensive for me (over R300k).

Are there any safe but reliable mods that can improve the stock performance without risking damage or motor plan and also aren't very expensive?

320i vs 320d, will never as the diesel has more torque and pushes the car faster of the line. 0 - 100km/h according to bmw's standards the petrol version will always beat the diesel version, in this case 7.3 s vs 7.5 s

For interest sake. My old F20 125i could not keep up with my buddies E90 320d. So I reckon a 320i vs 320d will be even worse off. The figures suggests it should be the other way around but on the road the figures didn't stand up.

On paper it does, but for all intents and purpose the diesel is quicker.

It's difficult to explain when the figures are so closely matched, but when you drive them back to back it's easy to pick up on.

A street race is also never really only to 100km/h

For interest sake here is a comparison of acceleration times between F30 320i vs 320d (both auto)

Left is the 320i and right is the 320d

If I get the 320i, are there any performance mods I could do to improve performance at a modest cost? If I buy this car next week its still going to be under motorplan, so I need to be weary of any performance enhancements that could void the warranty.

I need something with good bang for your buck and most importantly, safe enough so as not to void the warranty/motor plan and motor of the car. Any ideas?

There was a discussion on the forum the other day - basically it boiled down to the fact that all plug and play units etc. are traceable by BMW.

JB4 will completely transform the 320i, but will be picked up by BMW and your motorplan will most likely be void.

It's a turbo car, so yes, you can extract some extra HP.

As Ferdi says, any mods will probably void MP. As for reliability, I'm not really sure as there hasn't really been any high mileage owners reporting back with feedback?

Lastly, just remember if you mod the 320i it might mess up the fuel economy even further.

That audi looks much nicer than a base 320i to be honest.. Interior looks cool too.. Performance wise the 1.8 can also be remapped, Revo tune them well. If the Polo GTi is anything to go by this should wake up well with some Revo software and downpipe etc..

Family member has had major $$&# with a Q5 though, so not sure about them mechanically!

I've heard the JB4 can't be picked up by BMW. Doesn't matter in my case, because I'm out of plan already.. but I must say it's made my car feel pretty dang powerful. Although at stock it was perfectly fine as well.

Let's be real, you're probably going to be town driving/traffic most of the time, you don't need anything crazy (although nice to have)

It's really up to you. What suits your needs in terms of your daily route, fuel economy, etc and how much you have to spend. The A3 is cool too, but I'd rather have a Beemer personally :blowheart:

Side note: The A3 and F30 are pretty different in terms of what you might need. Do you want a 2-door? Or a 4-door and a boot? A bit like comparing apples and oranges.

How did the test drives go if u don't mind me asking

Personally I was in a similar situation about a year ago, stuck deciding between an audi and bmw, both out of the box.

Disappointed with a choice on the 1.9 litre BMW which seems to struggle with economy on lower gears in comparison to my older cars.

Hi there, date for the test drive changed for tomorrow morning. Will revert back with my impressions on both cars.

I don't know how practical the Audi A3 model is (it's a 3 door). I'll have to see, whereas the 320i has got a decent amount of space if I ever have a family :)rollsmile:) or need to pack the car with stuff.

One thing is for sure, the Audi looks (to me) far nicer and sportier. The interior looks nice too.
