F30 320d warm up time?

Hi Guys, im in need of some diesel knowledge...

I have a 2014 320d n47 with 107xxx km, im rather new to world of diesels. I noticed it takes ages to warm up to operating temp, but that is comparing it to my e36 petrol. i timed it this morning, outside temp was 12'C, idle the car for 2mins, about 5mins of slow moving to get to the highway and then about 20mins @ 100-130km/h. Its taking 25min to warm up, is that normal on diesels ? if not i would think the thermostat is not working?

Thanks

Hi there. So from what I understand is that the operating temperature in your 320d is actually oil temperature and not coolant temperature like in your e36. Apparently the turbo BMWs show oil temperature and not coolant temperature like they used to in the past. My petrol e39 used to get to operating temperature quickly as well. So to answer your question, your car seems to be okay. I own an f30 330d and when I immediately join a highway after a cold start it takes maybe 15 mins or so to get to 100c, i.e half way of the oil temperature gauge.

My 320d takes quite awhile to get operating temp. The gauge measures oil temp so about 20 minutes on a cold day sounds about right.

Oil temperature does take longer to go up versus coolant temperature. As mentioned before, the F30 has an oil temp gauge. I wouldn't worry about it. Just take it easy and it will go up to optimal temp. Keep revs low in that time.

On a side note, my Mazda CX5 SkyActiv had an AWS (accelerated warm up system) that automatically kept the revs at a certain safe level when starting the car from cold. Granted, this was a high compression petrol motor (14:1) though.

Not to alarm you, but i experienced this some years back now on a 320d E90. Car would take ages to get to operating temp, then one day I just lost power on a 10km trip from work to the house, went into limp home mode.
Came home, parked off, started like normal the next day on my way to work, but 2kms into the 10km trip, same loss of power.

Took it to bmw, cats were clogged they said,so they replaced that, then another 2-3 weeks and same story, took it back to bmw and they reckon oil had turned into sludge, PUMA case was opened, guy from germany eventually flew out, made them open everything, cleaned everything, replaced injectors, filters and oil.

Got the car back and it was magic until about a month later when it started smoking and took it back to find gaskets needed replacing.

Long story short, if you are not having problems with it, the occasional long drive from time to time should be fine.
Apparently on the newer motors you dont need to warm up or cool down a turbo motor as the diesels are capable of operating properly at all levels.
