Hi Guys,

I am sure this subject was covered before, so if it was pls could you direct me to it, my 2014 320d came off motor plan in nov 2019. I am now looking for a decent mod for more power and torque but not effecting reliability of the car.
It has 65,000kms and has the M performance brakes with the paddle shifts.

Thanks

Hi bud,

Great news, you can finally "play around" now with the car. There is some decent power that can be released on that vehicle, and achieved with great reliability.

Those motors are one of the best diesel in the market. As above is correctly stated, you can do the following in terms of power gains but also practicality:

1. Downpipe (removal of the CAT to allow the turbo to spool more freely).
2. Engine software (to get those horses unleashed)
3. BMC or K&N Flatpanel filter (the car beathes a bit better and also, lifetime washable which also helps with further costs of servicing as well)
4. Gearbox software (does improve the drive and experience, many many features and gains however you need to check the packages and if you will want it, a lot of guys do it when pushing power or they feel their gearboxes are just not doing things up to their standards).
5. Intercooler - An option that comes with all the MPPK packs from BMW, however again depending on what you after, this can be done or not. Ideally, the 320ds dont require this with the above mods and easy reliable power.
6. Reliability wise - You must check your boost seals for any leaks or sweating of oil because once you have software and push more power, these can be easy weak points. Seals are cheap, easy to fit. your car is still low mileage so you should have any other things to look out for.

All the above can be done by Xcede, one stop shop and for decent pricing. They are under the vendor section as well....or chat to @Sherwin@Xcede or @Singh911.

Those air filters... How does one wash them?
Are they foam or what material are they made from and how effective are they compared to a regular air filter? I imagine washing it to be quite difficult and not getting all the dirt out properly.

I have a foam air filter on my bike and it's a bitch to clean and doesn't ever seem to end up fully clean again.

I agree with downpipe to remove the dpf, software and possibly gearbox software. That's generally the mods done on a 20d and what I'm looking at doing on my 320d - same engine as yours but E90 so different body.

I have had K&N filter in all my cars, in the diesel it was better (maybe placebo effect) but i felt it pulled smoother and was breathing better. It cost me R850 and I never had to change the filer again, so every service saving average of R450 for an OEM replacement.

The washing was done with the cleaning kit, remove from the panel...dust it out and then spray on the cleaning agent and let it sink it for a bit then rinse once that is done. let it dry but not totally, then oil it up and install again.

Even my little 1.4 Polo had it...in the turbo cars it makes a bigger difference, on my M135i it made a great difference with sound and also breathing tons better than the oem filter.

I have never done a foam filter as I have always heard horror stories of them...I jsut was never brave enough to try them.

But each to his own, I would say if I am keeping the car for long and out of plan it helps and makes a difference. it did in my E90 320d which was remapped and modded well till the car i have right now....

Stick to OEM filters. As for the sw and Dp, I would get first hand feedback from the person who actually did the mods on his F30 320d. Get hold of @TAL007, he is the right person to chat to. I decided to keep mine as it is because I'm not planning to keep it for long, it will be easier to trade it in when the time come. My advice, keep the car as it is and enjoy it for few years, then sell/trade and upgrade to F30 330D for more power or 335i/340i. Stash that R7k or R8k for rainy days

I got my F30 320d at 140k kilometers, and within 6 months I took out the dpf and got software remap....best decision ever!! One of my reasons was that the turbo was a bit old so to relief the pressure on it, downpipe (dpf removal) was an option. I was a bit sceptical about the exhaust sound in the beginning but I'm actually loving it now.

Now in a case of a car at 65000kms, yes it also makes sense to keep it stock if you don't have intentions of keeping it for long. But in my experience after modifying this car, I have no reason to let it go, it's got powerful yet effortless acceleration that you'll feel & enjoy even on Comfort mode. Maintenance hasn't changed, I just change my oil at regular service intervals and I'm good. Future plans?.....yes most definitely - I'm going hybrid and Madness Motorsport will be assisting with that.
