While the 316i may not be to the taste of some people, there is a market for it. Some people do not want to go used and prefer a new BMW with an option here or there. It's a BMW on a budget for a compact saloon. I don't think a person will be an idiot for choosing what they can afford. That is a difference of roughly R13k and perhaps more importantly, below R400k.

to be honest,i would buy one if i was going on pension and it was my last car that i would buy,and knowing i would only doing short journeys around town
also when my son turns 18,should be able to get one second hand at a good price for him,knowing he is in a very safe and reliable car

Not everyone buys a car for the kw rating or a big budget but would still like to buy a brand new car.
For an entry level saloon, ai think its a good buy. You get german engineering and BMW quality at a competitive price.
I also see it being popular the the company car and car hire market. Alot of on the road reps will also buy this over other saloon offerings in the market.

I think a 316i is spot on. If you look at Audi and Merc, they have entry level models below the 320i power class (i.e c180 and A4 1.8t 88kw), so its obvious from a marketing point of view that BMW was losing out on this market share, considering how these models sell in droves.
There are also people out there that dont really care about KW's or 0-100 times. They would also like to drive something premium, but meeting ends meet and the state of their bank balances are of far more importance, I think the 316i is aimed at them
People might say that say that the 320i is ''only'' R30k more than the 316i, but lets be honest, R30k is alot of money, and it is the difference between making or breaking a monthly budget w.r.t installments, insurance costs, etc.
Its also the difference between sitting behind the brand new wheel of a VW Golf or F30 BMW.
I am never quick to dismiss an entry level BMW, as personal experience has shown that the entry level models might not be the fastest or the most powerful, but are usually the most engaging to drive and hone your driving skills on. Grip far greater than the power, skinnier tyres, usually lighter in weight, less frills to distract you from the basic design, etc, although this theory goes out the window when you can specify 19'' wheels and a drag inducing bodykit and not to mention a myriad of options on a car that only has 100kw.
On the positive side: It's turbo charged! So once the Motorplan is finished, and a visit to your local tuner is in the pipeline, 316i, 320i or 328i, its anybodies game...

But those that then do have the 40k extra and take the M-sport or / and other extras on top of the 316i base instead of taking the 320i, doesn't make sense
