discussion F20 rough idle

Hi Everyone, i need some advice please. I noticed a "rough idle" on my F20 (118i) last year during lockdown. It didn't bother me too much as i only drove to the shop etc. So when i cold start, i barely notice the problem. Once i drive somewhere, stop the engine, and then start again is when i notice the car kind of struggle as if its not getting enough fuel. Attached is a sound clip. My cars fuel pump relay was replaced in Dec 2020 after a break down and got towed in. The fuel pump went on 19 March after another break down and tow in. Then the car came back with a fuel leak, which was repaired on Wednesday. Just before lockdown started last year my injectors were replaced and the coils. The Bmw dealer told me yesterday that they must do a software upgrade and i have to sign an indemnity just in case the control unit blows if they do the update. I cannot believe that the software is the cause of my cars struggle at start up? My car is out of warranty so now its time to just fork out hard earned cash? Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks in advance

If your car is out of warranty don’t waste your time and money at the stealerships. Find a good independent mechanic who specialises in F-series BMW. A good mechanic should be able to show you the codes and explain what’s wrong using proof, irrespective of your knowledge of cars. If you’ve narrowed down to fuel issues, maybe it’s the low pressure fuel pump? I’m not sure if that engine has a High pressure pump. I’ve seen people having to buy brand new injectors too.

You’re supposed to drive that F20, don’t let these swine BMW mechanics take you for a ride...

Thanks for your input. Yeah, the only issue is finding a proper mechanic...

Hi there. Sounds like you might have figured out what the issue may be on your 118i? I have the exact same car, and I also had a rough idle issue.

My rough idling would occur when the car is in operating temperature, between about 1700rpm-3000rpm. Turns out it was the exhaust vanos. Got that and a timing kit - all was good.

Hi. Thanks for the reply. I actually haven't got it sorted yet as the Bmw dealer said i must bring my car back and leave it with them for a full week to investigate... Clearly they dont know what the issue is or where it stems from. What did the exhaust vanos and timing kit cost u?

Here's the breakdown for you for what I paid. I used a BMW specialist up here in Johannesburg:
- Exhaust vanos: R8 903.66
- Timing kit: R2 601.18
- Labour: R2 800.00.

The total including VAT was R16 450.57.
