F20 118i vs other options

Hey Guys! Been looking around the forum for around a month now!! My wife and I have the new 118i in sight, but have to sell a corsa bakkie first. Would love a hatch but the other cars in this segment just doesn't seem to match the performance AND fuel efficiency figures of the new 1.

Also been contemplating a 130i - but I can't find too much realistic fuel consumption figures. I know there's quite a few 130i owners here on the forum so please share your fuel consumption.

Most probably the 118i will have to be new as there aren't that many demo's or secondhand ones around, yet. I know I know the looks, but it's like Twinz said, stand next to it - it's a LOT better looking in person.

I was actually looking at a double cab bakkie, but already have a isuzu extended cab so at this stage I think it's a bit pointless and would love to own a car for once.

The biggest thing or potential problem for me is the car losing more than its value in 5 years vs a bakkie. Which sucks a bit. But the 1 series seems to hold it's value rather ok.

Any input would be appreciated!

my wife drives a 2011 118iM E87. I can guarantee that it uses more fuel for less than half the kick of my 320d. Fuel consumption figures average about 9.9L according to OBC.

The F20 is apparently more fuel efficient than the E87, but dont expect exceptional frugality.

Based on what I have read, the 118i and 120i share the same engine, except the 118i uses a detuned engine. similar to what I have been told BMW does with the 323i and 325i.

In my opinion, knowing what I know now about my wife's 118iM, i would have advised her to get the 120i.

1st prize was the 120d, but the dealer wanted my left nut, and I wanted to keep it instead.

In the end, i advise you to opt for what suits your pocket and personality.

if it was me, I would buy a demo 320d E90 LCI, they are going to go for a song soon, as soon as the F30 is released in march.

Consider it.

Yes the 1 series hold its value insane, when I bought mine the sales representative said people just want to buy demo's and that reason alone will make the car hold its value extremely well.
We also had a second option and it was also a bakkie they gave us excellent trade in value + 40k off the list price but it was due for replacement end of year and that will make the current bakkie model depreciate insanely.
So we bought the newly released model because it will take a couple of years to be replaced and thus get better trade in when you eventually want to sell and of course it’s an bmw so expect good quality and excellent fuel efficiency.

The previous 130i e87 might depreciate more than the current f20 shape.

Good luck with the decision and hope you choose the correct vehicle. If you buy a BMW please return with pics.

In the f20 the 116i and 118i both have the 1.6turbo charged engine. With the 116i being 100kw and the 118i being 125kw. The 120d is still the same power and is still a very desirable car, but once again, they want your left nut and a bit of the right one for it. I'd rather opt for a 320d for a little bit extra.

I also thought about the 320d being cheaper after the new F30 comes out. lol , but you know then you want the new F30 again!! haha

Please note that the 118i and 120i Nastaliq are revering to are normal aspirated.
The specs will speak for themselves:
E87
118i 2005–2007 N46B20
1,995 cc (122 cu in) I4 16v 95 kW (127 hp) 180 N•m (130 lb•ft) 9.4 s (MT)
2007– N43B20
1,995 cc (122 cu in) I4 16v [25]
105 kW (141 hp) 190 N•m (140 lb•ft)
8.7 s (MT)
120i 2004–2007 N46B20
1,995 cc (122 cu in) I4 16v 110 kW (150 hp) 200 N•m (150 lb•ft) 7.9 s (MT)
2007-
1,995 cc (122 cu in) I4 16v[25]
130 kW (170 hp) 210 N•m (150 lb•ft) 7.7 s (MT)

F20
118i 1.6 L 170 hp (127 kW) @4800 250 N•m (180 lb•ft) @1500-4500 7.4 (7.5)

So please note that the 118i F20 is more powerful than the 118i and pre-facelift 120i of the e87 shape and the new turbo petrol f20 118i will give you an average fuel consumption ratio of 5.9l/100km for the manual.

So it is almost a double improvement in fuel consumption than the previously e87 118i and is definitively not sluggish.

Thats my 2 cents.

The only reason I'm considering a 130i is that it will be cheaper now and I can drive it for a year or 2 and then it won't lose to much and then I don't owe anything on it anymore..

But if the fuel consumption is really terrible then I won't consider it

Hi, yes I own a 120d got 200km on the clock now but its brilliant, new from the ground up design, the vehicle got that new drive command options that is quite nice + the most significant change for me was the improvement in drive comfort compared to the previous model you would never think the car uses run flat tires it is totally insane how the car handle bumps and impurities in the road.
The reason I bought the 1 is because it’s new (get some staring eyes when I drive by hehe) and the value will hold well + the excellent fuel efficiency to power ratio.
My advice is to go test drive the vehicles in your price range and after the test drive decide which car best suit your needs, that is how I operate in choosing my vehicles.
