Have any members experienced problems with the timing chain on the N 20 engine ? See website bmwtechnician.com for info.

Hi, I have read up on this as well as my 2012 F30 328 has a similar noise. Going to be booking it in next week. I even did the check on shining a light on the cam chain by opening the oil cap.. I see some abrasive marks on the chain so will wait to see with BMW says. My car is on 95xxxkms.
A bigger concern. In Europe and America they have revised the oil change intervals on these cars. In this country we still sit on 25000kms or 2years. Which is crazy for a turbo car especially in our hot and dusty climate..

Hi guys, I have some experience. Got mine replaced last year.

So the "Chime" usually sounds like a high-pitch sound that increases with engine rev. It sounds like an electric motor on-top of your usual engine noise.

It's due to the cheap plastics they used to "guide" either the timing chain or the oil pump chain.

Take it to BMW and tell them to replace them if under motorplan.

absolutely ridiculous...some poor guy is going to have this out of motorplan with a full service history etc. & have to pay a lot of money...not cool!

Mine was picked up on taking my car in and asking them to check why the idle seems a bit rough. They said they need to replace the timing chain. I just hope nothing else was damaged in the process, as my motor plan expires next month. Would hate for something to go wrong after that that relates somehow to this, and I have to pay for that.

Hi RyanGD, just curious what model F30 do you have? I see in this thread that it mentions the problem was fixed in the 2014+ models.

Is your one still under MP?

I have a 2014 320i Msport. Dealers said the noise is defnitely not related to my timing chain. Waiting for full report still.

I hope they find the reason for the noise, and get her sorted and running smooth again.
Good luck with the iDrive too.

I had this same problem with my 2012 car - had the engine replaced with only 60000kms on the clock and luckily it was 2 months before the motorplan expired.

No such issues on my 2013 car though.

I had a F20 125i , engine seized due to the poor design on cam chain guides being made from plastic. This happened in the month post Motorplan expiry.
I was fortunate that I had an aftermarket warranty that covered it after a few assessments and lots of prayer.
I think there are lawsuits in the US against Bmw for this.
Bmw upgraded the engine in 2015 I think (not sure) .
A recall was needed and would have saved many motors and Bmw service and reputation.
I like these cars but the customer care/service is deteriorating.

All I can say is. I realy dont want a 320i or 328i out of motor plan. I have seen to many of these engines gone bad compared to the diesel models. They nagged me to buy a 320i for they are cheaper and meet my budget and trade my 320d. I refused and now out of motor plan and Im still happy with my ride with No engine problems :praise:

320i will never beat fuel consumption of the 320d like I drive
