Expansion tank on the Touring

Howzat guys,

What a way to start the weekend...So this morning I was driving the Touring and on William Nicol off ramp I noticed the heat guage going to ¾ and as I took the offramp trying to head to the Caltex garadge I heard a “pop” and steam coming from the bonnet. Got off the car and saw all the anti-freeze on the floor. Left her for a while to cool down and then checked for the cause and notice the expansion tank burst :thumbdo:

I called two guys with e46’s and they said it’s a common problem, is this true? Anything to look out for/change when fitting the new tank?

Thanks

Replace the expansion tank, thermostat and thermostat housing.

its a common fault on all E46's

Unfortunately it seems to be a well know problem. While you're at it check/replace all hoses, thermostat and thermostat housing. If the housing is plastic you could replace it with a metal one.

Edit: Nikhil beat me to it. I think you need to buy the expansion tank cap separately.

Yes, the cooling system as a whole is a known weak point on the E46.

As already mentioned:

Expansion Tank + Cap
Thermostat
Waterpump
Hoses

If this happens to you in jhb, I've got 2 spare expansion tanks and I might be able to come out(depending on my shift) and help you change it on the road. They pretty easy to change, just a T25 needed, screwdriver would be helpful.

I'm pretty busy today but I'll create a thread of spare parts that I have that can be changed fairly easy on the road to get you going again.
