If its not leaking at the moment I don't see how you will notice if its going to go? usually something you only see when it happens.

Yeah you can't, can pretty much just do one of two things, replace for the sake of replacing when the car is over 100k km or you just have to be alert for signs that it is leaking, coolant smell, increased operating temperature, loss of coolant, low coolant warning etc.
I prefer the former as knowing that the tank might and being prepared for it is one thing, but i don't to be stuck next to the road or be put in situation where i can't stop safely and run the real risk killing your motor, and in this case even buying the tank from the dealer seems like a small price to pay compared to the alternative of possible motor damage.

When I purchased my 330i, the first thing I did was take it to Juan at House of B, he inspected the expansion tank to get the production date. He informed me that the bottle only has a lifespan of approximately 4 years. So I did not take chances and had it changed immediately especially with summer coming in.

Cost was R1340 for the OEM bottle from Northcliff Auto with coolant supplied and fitted.

I was not willing to compromise on quality and safety.

The expansion tanks sold at Goldwagen are of the same quality as the agents.

Coolant would have cost a few bucks...from a motor spares shop

And fitment is an easy DIY (we have many DIY instructions on this forum)...

So spend the bucks and get the better tank from Goldwagen ... And then DIY

Silverton does Behr Radiators and expansion tanks (not sure if this is Behr too)

When I was looking for a radiator and expansion tank for the 740i, they had stock and was cheaper than dealers.

So maybe try them
