Rowen, step 3 is what I am after. where can we get that?

It's called Rawsons. Got it from Builders, in their polishing/sandpaper section.

The end result (step 3) is only as good if step 1 is right. Preparation affects 80% of the end result.

Thanks for posting Rowen,

Are you refering to the drill attachment? Or the metal polish used?

Ok, my Saturday morning activity for the weekend is sorted

Join the Club.

I also find after i get the exhaust nice and shiney, coating it with some colli 845 wax keeps it shining for longer.

If you got normal steel pipe and not chrome, I used some 800 grit then 1200 grit to get it clean in the beginning

I am a firm fan of Autosol metal polish...works on any metal...!

With autosol, you dont need fancy polishers or anything...some elbow grease and effort....will bring up the same results as Rowen:thumbs:

what about good old brasso?
I tried it on my standard diesel tip and the metal came out brightish, problem was with the coarseness of the metal, I will need to sand that still.

Good info in the thread

I picked up this technique from Rowen as well. Which is why I refer to it as "The Rowen Method" of tailpipe polishing. I also have a fetish for a super clean undercarriage and I do the silencer polish as well. Makes a HUGE difference!

I think everything has been covered. For that chrome effect you will need to follow Rowens method. I picked up the polishing kit from builders which came with the mops and various levels of compounds. Once you have the pipes polished to an acceptable level, I use Autoglym metal polish and top up with Collinite #845 wax for protection and added shine. This step alone makes a HUGE difference.

I find other metal polishes like Autosol etc. a bit to abrasive and they have scratched my chrome tips in the past.

Also the biggest problem most face with restoring tailpipes is that built up carbon crud that sits on the bottom half of your tips.

Most metal polish alone can not clean that up. The best way to remove this is to use a bit of steel wool + metal polish. Rinse and Repeat if necessary until it is completely clean. DO NOT use the steel wool on the outside of your pipe as this will severely scratch it. Use only on the outer tips!

This is the outcome of a brushed aluminum tailpipe, using the method decribed above:

I've just found some Autosol in the garage.
What drill tips should I use.

May I just add the tailpipes are only a week old so want to keep them polished.

Now if you want to be cool. Try this on a decatted car that runs LRP.

Or a Diesel with no cats:

I had just washed, polished and waxed them only to start the car and this happened.

Where can I get the drill attachment? Approx cost?

I paid around R130 for my kit around 4 years ago. Check out your local builders. If you don't come right, give me a shout and I will hook you up.

The kit comes with two polishing "pads" and about 5 different polishing stick compounds.
