I just wanted to find out what a raspy exhaust sound means?
And is it a good or a bad thing?

It is the sound an E46 exhaust makes when the cats are taken out and not putting in resonators and X-pipes to combat the sound. Basically the exhaust gasses reach a high velocity before exiting the exhaust, the gases "crash" in the exhaust and expand too rapidly, causing the rasp.
