Came across this while surfing the web.
Very interesting-
Maybe not spot on with the 2012 range, but still very insightful.

 I never understood why they never produced the M3 Compact...when the compact came out there was a Hugh call by everyone for the M but they just ignored the calls, that must have been a beast.

The M6 you are referring to was a US only version of the M635csi (M88 Motor) and was de-tuned to meet US emissions requirements.

The M5 convertible was a skunk works car that has only been seen a few times. BMW Car Mag did an article on it about 8 months ago. I never made it to production as they could not get the weight down on the reinforcements required to the body post removing the roof.

So many still born //Ms...

M8
M5convertable

Oh, wait there are only 2

Errr..... 3 - e39 M5 Touring

Doh, I thought that was just not brought to SA. I probably saw a tarted up 540 on some web site and thought it was an M5. What a pity...

That would make a nice project... transfer M5 internals over to a touring... but I suppose if it was that easy BMW would have done it.
