Hi all ....

so this past weekend my car was running well all was good. i switched my car off ran into the garage came back out started the car and like 100 m down the road stopped at a robot , when the robot turned green the car threw a error"ENGINE OVER HEATING" the car refused to move as if its in LIMP mode..

from various threads i believe this could be the water pump that has failed ??

what causes this water pump to fail ??

How much would it cost me if i had to get this sorted by a reputable person ?

Its an electric water pump.. they fail when they wish too. One of those things.. You need to check error code, could something else but its probably 90% water pump. If you do the pump, do the thermostat too.

Members can tell you where to go depending on your area. There is a way to test the pump with the car stationary.. same way you bleed the system. Just google your car type and should find a ytube vid. Im talking about my n54 motor , but as far as im aware procedure is the same across the range.

Depending on pump and labour, 6k - 9k

It appears that you have the same problem as what I had 3 months ago.

The waterpump is on its way out, the car will work from time to time but it will ultimately come down to the frequency of this error "engine overheating, please stop and shut down engine" as it will become more frequent.

Let me explain, I was on my way home from Krugersdorp and the car said that message as I was cruising at 120km/h pass diepsloot, scared the crap out of me and I pulled over. Waited 10 minutes, started and the problem was gone, thought hey....new 2nd hand car to me, maybe this is how it works. Fast forward to 3 months ago the frequency changed from once a month to once a week to startup (10min idle).

I phone bmw and almost lost a limp due to the price they quoted me,
Waterpump - R7132.13 and thermostat R1608.03. Thought no way am I paying that for a waterpump, phoned Goldwagen and same parts Waterpump - R4450 and thermostat R1100.

Long story short you are looking at R7K for replacement without labour, below is a video for a DIY on this, took around 5hours for a novice DIY'er to do it.

Here is the video http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?p=19280004

Good luck with this and I know how you feel.
