I also suspect HID's gone bad...

no mods to the lights only thing that was done aftermarket amp and subwoofer was fitted with a inline convertor tapping from rear speakers but that was done a month before incident

Only thing in that area that has the potential of getting that hot is either the ballast, or I have heard on certian cars, that the electric fan can actually overheat.

Do you have an electric or viscus fan.

e46 fan can catch fire but you did not mention any damage to it?

the fan is working not realy damage only thing thats not working is the resistor so it desnt seems the fan caused the fire but if u connect it with a relay its working s i dont think its the fan i might be wrong cause the wires from the headlight started to burn so im confused i read up some post the same scanario car parked after switch off the car start burning very unnusuall but no explanation

well I dont think you have to worry if the repair was done correctly... never heard of this happening to an e46 so you must just have been unlucky :(

I got no idea how long it will take to replace the loom... not a general repair :)

good idea to change it just incase though... might be tricky to get it in with the engine in the bay
