EGR Valve

Hi guys,

My wife complained about smoke coming from the the bonnet, and when I checked, I saw that the EGR Valve had a hole as big as a match head and after removing it, discovered that it had another 6 pin prick holes as well (part connecting to the exhaust cooler)

I phoned Zambesi Auto (dealership) [Part No : 11 71 7 804 378] and got quoted R2900-00 excluding V.A.T

After cleaning the unit, when sucking/blowing on it, nothing happens.

Is the plunger supposed to move, or does it only operate when it is connected to the cars vacuum system.

If the valve is indeed faulty, where can I buy a valve that's cheaper, than the dealers.

I noticed that after using Pratley steel on the holes, it starts much better.

Beemo's quoted me R2850-00

Any comments would be highly appreciated.

Hi Peet  First time I hear about a hole in the EGR. Is it a corrosion hole?

The plunger is quite stiff and human lungpower will not make it move :) You can use a flat screwdriver to lift the plunger though.

The pratley steel trick will work as the hole will mess around with the idling etc similar to any hole in the intake pipes or boots. The Pratley trick is however NOT RECOMMENDED as that a bit of the pratley can go into the engine. Have you seen how a piston head can look like a dimpled golf ball?

What some do is to strip out the inners of the EGR all together. But since your EGR body is damaged, I'd say just get a replacement at a scrapyard. Alternatively get a EGR delete kit. You could make something like this yourself too.

Apparently land rover used a similar engine and have an EGR blank that should fit perfectly. Bossman had the details IIRC.
