If you can, try and borrow a DSLR from someone so you can have feel what it is like, and what it is like to use before you buy, cause it is not for everyone. This is what I am doing at the moment.

Also don't forget that there are some really awesome compact cameras out there nowadays so you don't necessarily need a DSLR to take good photos.

i use a Nikon D300s with a 18 - 200 lens

Here are some of my pics most are tonemapped HDR images from 3 different exposures just so there is some variation. Pictures were taken with a Nikon D300 + 11mm wide angle lens and Polarising filter.
