Morning guys and ladies,
I was just curious, I have a 320d E96 and know the frustration when the turbo goes like it did on my E46, and to prevent that, i would like your honest opinion of the service period on the E96's turbo? My car has done 122000km and still doing very well, but really dont want a surprise attack?
Thanking you in advance!

The turbos are fine on the E90's, it is the actuator that is the problem. BMW changed over from vacuum operated actuators to electrical actuators and these electrical actuators that work the vanes on the turbo give trouble. No one that i am aware of in SA can fix this so you have to get a new turbo to get the actuator as it is part of the turbo package. Some give problems, some not, so you can never be sure. It seems as if the 2l diesel turbos have more problems with the actuators than the 3l, not sure why. Could be that the 2l turbo is from Mitsubishi (i think) and the 3l from Garret?? There is a company in the UK that fixes the actuator, but cannot recall the name.
