E92 N55 Woes

Hi Guys,

So car been giving a few problems recently where it has been more in the workshop then on the road. (thankfully still on motorplan)

Last year the DCT clutches were replaced in Dec.

To take you back, It went in for service where they replaced the alternator a few months back as part of their normal inspection. (3 months back)

Then the coolant tank cracked, to which the tank, piping to turbo and few other odds and ends (cam cover with PCV Valves etc) were replaced when a pressure test was carried out. (about 2 months back)

Thereafter the shaft seals and gaskets were replaced last month as well as the radiator as it was found to be leaking so that was replaced too.

Problem arose yesterday when I was normally making my way home in hardly any traffic (100-120km/h driving) where the gearbox overheating warning (see pic) kept on popping up - called BMW on call to which vehicle was taken to Joburg City Auto.

Received a call from the guy there who advised the temperature sensor that sits near the clutches on the gearbox is faulty and would need to be replaced.

My question is what should i look out for once taking the car back once its repaired? as the motorplan is expiring in Feb 2019 and i would like to sort out any other gremlins before then........

buy a n55 they said. it will be "reliable" they said...

Turns out its just as bad at being reliable as a n54 afer a few years of age:fencelook:

Imo get everything sorted with the motorplan and sell it... Are you the 1st owner?

Worst advice I have ever come across on the internet haha. OP has just been unlucky and what he has experiences is very out of the norm. Dont come put kak in his head. N55 is a great engine, and the E82 135i is a great car. None of the above has anything to do with the reliability of the N55.

Check to see if they replaced the suction jet when they replaced the clutches, it fits onto the gearbox sump.

If you have a computer to read the codes, perhaps have everything fixed, take it for a short drive and see if any errors pop up?

These platforms can be very reliable, but going through all of this means you lose a lot of confidence in the reliability of your car.

I agree 100%

Its rare but some cars are just a lemon. Or it has been abused by a previous owner and you unknowingly buy it... The repairs are very excessive for a car still under motorplan...

I would sell it as soon as it seems fixed by bmw

:eek:mgwaiting: me thinks he just had all the problems at once, unless they are reocuring then this car should be good for a long time. Just Unluccky thats all.
These N55 are fairly robust unless a second owner car from some one who modified and abused.
 good luck sorting things out

I wouldn't take it JHB City Auto after the numerous complains

Unfortunately that was BMW on Calls suggestion - they found the temperature sensor to be faulty and had to strip the whole gearbox to replace it.........

2 week wait, R2000 part and R8000 labour paid by Motorplan

What are the chances that the prang the car had was the reason for the subsequent issues?

https://www.bmwfanatics.co.za/showthread.php?tid=87434

I dont trust ARC's anymore than i would any other Panel beater.

This was purely cosmetic, headlight cracked, bumper cracked and bonnet bent........no damage to the chassis or radiator mounts etc etc

Is it possible to request the jobcard from the dealership?
