And so we had a Fanatics E90 320d in the shop for rear wheel bearing replacement
What a mission !
The right rear, came off without too much issues, but the left rear is totally siezed on the CV joint shaft, and just would not budge.
We sprayed the entire area with penetrating fluid, and re-assembled it, as we fear that any more attempted force will destroy the CV joint
After all was re-assembled, my suspension technician took it for a test drive, and strangely the noise has now ceased, after only changing the right rear wheel bearing.
Client will be returning on Monday for us to attempt the left rear again, hoping that the penetrating fluid will make a difference over the weekend...and that it will come off this time.
and how is this for a true FANATIC, I found this little "sweetness" present on my desk when I came into the office.
It looks far too nice to eat, I feel like framing it...!
Also since we haven't yet completed the job to my or the clients satisfaction, the work done so far hasn't been charged yet...And I will only slice the cake to celebrate once the work done is satisfatory...
Thanks CliftonH
Sorry to revive this thread from the dead.
But it seems necessary to me.
I bought this car from Clifton in December 2014 and have had nothing but troubles with it since.
My latest problem with it started last week when my wife complained about a noise coming from the car as she drives forward while turning to the right.
I investigated while she was driving and determined that the noise came from the Left Hand rear wheel.
I removed the tyre and saw that there was excessive wear on the outer portion of the brake disk.
Upon further investigation in trying to find the source of this problem I noticed that I was able to move the break disk by hand and this was obviously what caused the problem as it was able to move while the brake calliper was fixed.
I then suspected that the wheel bearing was shot, and started googling it and stumbled upon this post.
Must say that I’m really not happy at this moment.

What's the endless list of issue you've had with the car?

• Airbag light module keeps kicking on the Airbag light even after it gets reset.
(Apparently this was caused by a vacuum cleaner under the seat)
• Right hand rear door struggling to close due to car being in an accident before.
• Brake pads started screeching without ever lightning up the warning on the dash.
(Upon changing the wear sensor I found it had been bridged with what seems like a thick copper wire)
• Right hand rear control arm (suspension) attachment bolt came loose and lost.
(This caused the control arm to dislodge itself on the loose side and dragged all over the RH rear wheel bearing, damaging itself and the bearing)
• Car smokes excessively and consumes insane amount of Diesel (11l/100km on a good day)
• Front bumper started peeling/cracking paint, upon investigation found that most of the right hand side of the bumper is made up of body putty.
• The Whole Crank pulley just broke off at the rubber
• Replaced power steering pump, upon investigation of the pump found about a half meter of fan belt stuck inside. (No wonder it wasn’t working when I bought it)
• Airbag light module keeps kicking on the Airbag light even after it gets reset.
(Apparently this was caused by a vacuum cleaner under the seat)
Very vague have you had the codes read? Plug could be loose under the seat. Have you checked that?
• Right hand rear door struggling to close due to car being in an accident before.
How would that be as a result of an accident unless the frame is severly skewed. Most likely a lock mechanism issue.
• Brake pads started screeching without ever lightning up the warning on the dash.
(Upon changing the wear sensor I found it had been bridged with what seems like a thick copper wire)
One cannot put blame of this on the owner as he has no control as to what mechanics do on his car. Also you should not solely rely on the cars electronic checks. A physical inspection never hurts.
• Right hand rear control arm (suspension) attachment bolt came loose and lost.
(This caused the control arm to dislodge itself on the loose side and dragged all over the RH rear wheel bearing, damaging itself and the bearing)
That's very unfortunate. Have the control arms been replaced before? They generally last quite long on the e90s. But again this is not the previous owners fault rather bad workmanship or part failure.
• Car smokes excessively and consumes insane amount of Diesel (11l/100km on a good day)
You bought a remapped 320d with a downpipe. Not sure what you expected in terms of smoke characteristics. If you are unhappy with it. Then I suggest finding a stock downpipe and have bmw flash the software to stock. Although that figure does seem high so something else may be wrong. My e90 320d I averaged about 9 around town.
• Front bumper started peeling/cracking paint, upon investigation found that most of the right hand side of the bumper is made up of body putty.
I don't think clifton ever had the bumper sprayed although could be wrong. But most cars of this age would have had a bumper or 2 resprayed.
• The Whole Crank pulley just broke off at the rubber
This is a VERY common issue with these cars. They tend to break around 100k to 150k kms.
• Replaced power steering pump, upon investigation of the pump found about a half meter of fan belt stuck inside. (No wonder it wasn’t working when I bought it)
Since you knew about the power steering pump not working. This point is irrelevant.
To be honest your endless list of issue doesn't seem that severe unless the car had been in an accident and the frame is twisted. Which I doubt. You are buying a second hand car that is now 10 years old.
