e90 rear wheelbearing replacement

Firstly buying a second car comes with its own inherent risks. There are many factors to consider regarding a wheel bearing, be it road conditions, driving style, type of bearing used etc.

I don't think that anyone can pin point where the problem lies and who is responsible.

Be that as it may, my suggestion is that this matter be discussed offline or via PM as the content and concern is between 2-3 parties.

If this is going to become a slinging match this thread will be locked and the concerned parties can sort it out among themselves.

I'm no expert but a loose brake disk and a noisy wheel bearing are two completely different issues with different symptoms altogether...?

Maybe I didn't explain it good enough how I reached the conclusion, I tried to keep the post as short and to the point as possible. Wouldn't want to explain every chain of thought and all the checks I did and by doing so bore the people who might read it. But can do so if you would like me to?

And my post was not intended to sling any mud. I was just unhappy about discovering this post and gave some information that was relevant to this post, even be it 1 year 5 months later from buying the car.

I can’t help it if my posts are misread or misinterpreted. As I said before I didn't expect any comment back from Clifton as I only tagged him in because he might find it interesting.

What a mission !

The right rear, came off without too much issues, but the left rear is totally siezed on the CV joint shaft, and just would not budge.

We sprayed the entire area with penetrating fluid, and re-assembled it, as we fear that any more attempted force will destroy the CV joint

After all was re-assembled, my suspension technician took it for a test drive, and strangely the noise has now ceased, after only changing the right rear wheel bearing.

Client will be returning on Monday for us to attempt the left rear again, hoping that the penetrating fluid will make a difference over the weekend...and that it will come off this time.

and how is this for a true FANATIC, I found this little "sweetness" present on my desk when I came into the office.

Sorry to revive this thread from the dead.
But it seems necessary to me.

I bought this car from Clifton in December 2014 and have had nothing but troubles with it since.
My latest problem with it started last week when my wife complained about a noise coming from the car as she drives forward while turning to the right.
I investigated while she was driving and determined that the noise came from the Left Hand rear wheel.
I removed the tyre and saw that there was excessive wear on the outer portion of the brake disk.
Upon further investigation in trying to find the source of this problem I noticed that I was able to move the break disk by hand and this was obviously what caused the problem as it was able to move while the brake calliper was fixed.

I then suspected that the wheel bearing was shot, and started googling it and stumbled upon this post.

Must say that I’m really not happy at this moment.

• Airbag light module keeps kicking on the Airbag light even after it gets reset.
(Apparently this was caused by a vacuum cleaner under the seat)
• Right hand rear door struggling to close due to car being in an accident before.
• Brake pads started screeching without ever lightning up the warning on the dash.
(Upon changing the wear sensor I found it had been bridged with what seems like a thick copper wire)
• Right hand rear control arm (suspension) attachment bolt came loose and lost.
(This caused the control arm to dislodge itself on the loose side and dragged all over the RH rear wheel bearing, damaging itself and the bearing)
• Car smokes excessively and consumes insane amount of Diesel (11l/100km on a good day)
• Front bumper started peeling/cracking paint, upon investigation found that most of the right hand side of the bumper is made up of body putty.
• The Whole Crank pulley just broke off at the rubber
• Replaced power steering pump, upon investigation of the pump found about a half meter of fan belt stuck inside. (No wonder it wasn’t working when I bought it)

You bought the car in Dec 2014, and only complaining about it now?

Alot could've happened during the course of that time...even with the CPA act, you have long surpassed the time period to have brought this information to the previous owners attention, or do you think that's being unreasonable?

Very vague have you had the codes read? Plug could be loose under the seat. Have you checked that?

• Right hand rear door struggling to close due to car being in an accident before.

How would that be as a result of an accident unless the frame is severly skewed. Most likely a lock mechanism issue.

• Brake pads started screeching without ever lightning up the warning on the dash.
(Upon changing the wear sensor I found it had been bridged with what seems like a thick copper wire)

One cannot put blame of this on the owner as he has no control as to what mechanics do on his car. Also you should not solely rely on the cars electronic checks. A physical inspection never hurts.

• Right hand rear control arm (suspension) attachment bolt came loose and lost.
(This caused the control arm to dislodge itself on the loose side and dragged all over the RH rear wheel bearing, damaging itself and the bearing)

That's very unfortunate. Have the control arms been replaced before? They generally last quite long on the e90s. But again this is not the previous owners fault rather bad workmanship or part failure.

• Car smokes excessively and consumes insane amount of Diesel (11l/100km on a good day)

You bought a remapped 320d with a downpipe. Not sure what you expected in terms of smoke characteristics. If you are unhappy with it. Then I suggest finding a stock downpipe and have bmw flash the software to stock. Although that figure does seem high so something else may be wrong. My e90 320d I averaged about 9 around town.

• Front bumper started peeling/cracking paint, upon investigation found that most of the right hand side of the bumper is made up of body putty.

I don't think clifton ever had the bumper sprayed although could be wrong. But most cars of this age would have had a bumper or 2 resprayed.

• The Whole Crank pulley just broke off at the rubber

This is a VERY common issue with these cars. They tend to break around 100k to 150k kms.

• Replaced power steering pump, upon investigation of the pump found about a half meter of fan belt stuck inside. (No wonder it wasn’t working when I bought it)

Since you knew about the power steering pump not working. This point is irrelevant.

To be honest your endless list of issue doesn't seem that severe unless the car had been in an accident and the frame is twisted. Which I doubt. You are buying a second hand car that is now 10 years old.

Not quoting anymore, that quote is getting way to big with all the quotes in the quotes.

Thank you very much for your feedback DieselFan.

1. I didnt get the codes read, only checked if the plug is secure and got it reset again. Still popped back up.

2. Lock mechanism seems fine, I suspect its slightly skewed because that is where impact happened (I can see because this is where the car was repainted)

3. I never blamed anything on the previous owner. And I have said this multiple times. I simply listed this as it was one of the things that I noticed and you asked me to list the "endless issues" I have had.

4. The control arm was never removed according to my knowledge. I dont know If it was removed when the wheel bearing was replaced or at any point in the life of the car so I cannot comment. I can only comment on what happened while the car was in my possession.

5. I know that remapped cars with DPF removed smoke more. I know because I have one (Another 320D) But this one smokes like a Putco Bus. And its obviously over-fueling. I will get the stock firmware flashed to see if it improves consumption. Might still be the same and then point me in the right direction like perhaps the injectors.

6. I just mentioned the bumper because I was asked whats on the "endless list of issues"

7. I didn't know they eat Crank pulleys so fast, thanx for the info.

8. I just mentioned the power steering because I was asked whats on the "endless list of issues"

I hope you get it sorted nico. Never nice having issues with a car. I would first get the codes read for the Airbag. It could be a number of things. On the e46 there was a common issue with the seat occupancy sensor. Could be something like that. Codes might also point to why it is smoking so much. Goodluck

Hi. Sorry only catching up now.
Like I said I am sorry. But truly it was not my fault.
The front door was not in an accident. There is plnty of pics on my threads to show it was th back door. And nico was aware of that.
Th front bumper I also have plenty of pics to show it was fine when I had it.
The air bag sensor I am aware of. I still took it to forgot his name in benoni and he reset it. And ran an diagnostic and confirmed all. Was well with the car.
Th car was on 200 000km when bought it. I also wanted to change that dampeer pulley. I even bought on but it got lost in transit. The power steering I told nico that it was going. He madde me finance it for more and give him the difference to repair it. I put new disc and pads on that car. Everything abt that car is on this forum. The smoke is because there is and aggressive. Map on it. Abt a month or two before I sold it I used it to dbn and I got 5.7l. I pod pics of that also.

I really loved that car. The only issue I was aware of was the accident which everyone knew and th power stering pump. The bearings was done by ralf and the car drove fine after he repaired it. If I recall when that nut came off I told u that it is still under warranty to take it back to him.

I am sorry Nico. I kinda know what u feel. I would be pissed as well. I just got angry cause it felt like u were saying that I sold u a crap car. I do apologize.

I guess we all learn lessons the hard way.

Damit, this was a lekker novel to read.
