E90 M3 trip to Durban

As mentioned on the subject, I will be traveling to the coast next week but I am caught in deciding which car to undertake the trip with. I have always flown to Durban but due to high costs of airlines I decided to take drive this school holidays.

Should I take my M3 to the cost and what is the expected distance to be covered per tank? excuse my lack of knowledge, the longest I do with the M is from PTA to Polokwane, the thrill of driving this naturally aspirated v8 on the coast I hear is something else and I wanna experience that but I do not want to end up spending the same money I would have spent on the airlines.

or should I just take the K04 Golf 6 GTI and be economical, has anyone recently done a trip down with the same model M to share some information?

Its an ///M, do you need more convincing....

mileage is relative.., the car, the driver, the fuel all factors into your consumption.

Driving at the speed limit, with cruise control on you will be able to do it with a single tank of fuel probably with a quarter tank to spare once you reach the coast

I normally get about 400-450kms a tank in and around town on my E92.
I expect you would get similar.
On the drive down you can get around 11l/100km at best.

You are worried about the petrol cost, and thus have already answered your own question, ie take the Golf.

I would still take the M3. You bought her to enjoy her, so take her and enjoy her. A couple of hundred rand isn't going to be the end of the world. Just make sure the oil and fluid levels are right and off you go.

I drove my M JHB to DBN last Nov.
you should get +-12.5l/100km on the trip down - easy driving.

urban and a little freeway driving I get 14-15L/100km. you definitely gonna be tempted to play some music when you here - so could go up.
Bring the M3 - you will enjoy. :praise:

yeah you are right, load, driving style and all of that contribute to consumption

I want to experience this at the coast though......

You have an M, why care about consumption? Enjoy the trip and drive safely.

On a relative cruise mode(around 140/150) you should get to Harrismith with just below half a tank and will need a top up for the other half of the journey.

I managed 11.5 up and 10.8 down
