Hi All and a happy new year...
I seem to be having an issue with my keys. I am unable to lock or unlock using the remote so i need to manually lock and unlock using the key inside the remote and the key still works to start the car.
Any help will be much appreciated...

Known problem with the E90

What happens is that one of the 4 central locking motors pack up, or start packing up.

Then , it draws too much current, and pops a fuse. If you double check you will see that its just a fuse, for now.

Usually the issue is the two front motors, which can be bought as a kit from BMW for a decent price, I think its like 2k.

If you change the fuse, it may work for another day, 6 months, or 5 years, there is no way of telling.

Ok,

Then that is something else

The central locking is controlled by the CAS unit, tricky one to diagnose.

Let me know if you do not come right.

I reckon I'm going to let BMW check and replace any suspect central lock or window mechanisms when it goes in for its service. Have noticed a few times that the driver's door window mechanism makes the odd clicking sounds which is usually a tell tale sign. And on the odd occasion when locking/unlocking one or another of the central locking motors makes a sort of churping noise while operating. It's intermittent, and usually goes away if I open and close all doors. But rather let them sort this out before something happens later on!

Chaps, my e90 actuator also packed up.
The LOCK SET P 51 21 7 273 000 was R748,85 excl from BMW, which is for both doors. This is really a good price.
The drivers door started locking up, intermittently. I could not open the door form inside or outside and had to use the passenger door to get in / out of the car :blab:
BMW charges about R800 to remove and replace them.

Good luck with the repair.

Thanks all for all the responses... I seem to have found my problem. When opening the bootlid of my e91 i noticed there was a kink in the piping that holds the rear windows washer pipeline and a few other electrical wires. after cutting it open i found one of the cables to have been slightly damaged by the kink and was hanging on a threat not making much contact at times. after re-soldering the problem area i found it all to be in good working order...

I'm having the same issue.

If it was the motor, wouldn't it not open at all? As in central locking becomes non-operational?

It works manually, but my key doesn't work. So isn't it the battery in the key?

The key manually pops the lock. I dont think it relies on the actuator. I had it on the passenger side and had to press the knob down and pull the handle to open it.

As said before, check fuses. If no fuses are blown and none of your doors are opening with the remote, then its not the actuators.

Glad the problem is fixed.

If anybody else has a problem like this in future, please be advised that sometimes, not always it can be the receiver that's In the rear dome.

I had this on one of my E90s and the dealership couldn't resolve after checking all the motors, the fuses etc, and then the last thing they checked was the receiver on the rear dome, that had come loose from all the vibrations through normal driving.

now, I imagine that this should be one of the first things to check since its so easy to do in the first place.

I would expect that the key does mechanically "unlock" the door, otherwise what's the point of it...

:flyfun:

Sorry, I could have worded that better.

What I meant was, the rest of the central locking functions as normal. THe only issue is that I can't lock or unlock the car remotely.

@Nastaliq - I will have the receiver checked.

Where is the rear receiver located, and what does it look like?
Pardon my ignorance, I'm learning as I'm going. Having same issue. Also E90, have to manually lock and unlock. Can use key to start.

My fuse map is MIA, anyone give me an idea of AMP of fuse to check. Will narrow it down.

I created an account to say this is what the issue was with mine too. Rear receiver not working properly, fuses were fine

Hi ALL

on my e70 x5 '08, the driver door lock got jammed, had to drive to a tech while holding the door :thumbdo: , they managed to unjam the door to lock and unlock, but then the central locking stopped working, so i can lock the driver door with the remote or comfort access, but to unlock i need to use the key, when i drive only the driver door locks the rest dont, when i use the central lock and unlock button still doesnt respond, does anyone who knows what could cause this??
