A bud of mine had a similar prob, had the oil changed and waterpump replaced. seemed to have fixed the prob. apparently he was told that it was caused by a carbon build up. luckily there were no damages. Have it checked out asap. is it still under MP?

Check this out - seems to be a common problem and not easy to diagnose (well the agents). If it is the same, then have the Valvetronic Eccentric Shaft Sensor checked/replaced.

I have the same problem, only on cold start - 325i E90 under m/plan. The 1st time it went in they cleaned both solenoids of the vanos. The vehicle was fine for 3 days then started again.

Vehicle is currently with Supertech and they tell me that the oil was low by one litre which possibly caused the problem. I will closely monitor for the next week and revert back on findings.

I would suggest steps in order below:
1. Check oil level
2. Clean the intake and exhaust solenoids
3. Flush the vanos
4. If all else fails, could be faulty vanos solenoids or co sensor

I'm no techy but did some reading on possibilities of cause.

All the best, let me know your findings.

Have they checked the Valvetronic sensor as posted with reference to the above vid?

It can be lots of things.
Loose / broken crank pulley bolt resulting in timing issues was the problem with mine.

Thanks, will check the sensor if this problem resurfaces.
