E90 Damper pulley

Howzit guys,

I plan on replacing my damper pulley soon but I am not sure whether I would need a special tool to hold the pulley while loosening and tightning the bolts...

My pulley is the 4 bolt system and I was hoping that I could leave my car in "Park" while I do it and the gearbox would hold the crank. Realoem does not show a tool so now Im confused.

Would I need the special tool and if so where do I get one? Or if someone has one that I could buy or borrow that would also be awesome!

Any opinions would be great:thumbs:

The 4 bolt pulley is normal thread. Righty tighty lefty loosy. From what i know, on auto gearbox you need to lock the flywheel. Dont try to crank the motor because of start button.

Please let us know if the bolts come loose by just leaving it in park.

I will see what I can do. It really shouldn't be that difficult.

I will never crank a vehicle to loosen a bolt, that just seems very crazy. I really think the gearbox should hold it as it is only torqued to 40Nm and 120Degrees....

At what kilometers does one look at the damper pulley? mine is at 100k at the moment.

Everyone reckons at 100k it should be done. I took some photos and can see the cracks in the rubber so I want to do mine and have the peace of mind that it won't just break.

Dam...mine hasn't been done and I'm on almost 150k. I have inspected the pulley regularly and it seems good. To be on the safe side though I guess I should just replace it.

BMW or Goldwagen? I see there's millions of opinions on this.

Would love to know too

I bought Goldwagen part based on the fact that it is German replacement parts so it should be good. I think it should be fine...

Please make sure you get the correct pulley according to your Vin number. There are 2 types.

Yip I did. Our goldwagen does not sell any BMW parts without the VIN number.

I changed mine at 180 000km as it started to sound like a bird.
Gw and bmw did not have stock so my mach sourced me one at a good price.

So the pulley is on with 4 new bolts, tensioner and idler changed and new serpentine belt as well. Everything good now!

Some things I learnt was that the gearbox does not hold the pulley/crank when the car is in park. So I had to make a tool to hold it in place so that I could torque the bolts.

It is really not difficult to do but was a challenge without the tool.

I don't mean to hijack the post, but thought I could add on here with my question instead of starting yet another e90 Crank Pulley post.

I'm planning to change mine out now as preventative maintenance. I'm sitting on just under 150k km's on the original pulley. It seems fine...but probably safest to change out.

I'm stuck between purchasing a BPR branded pulley from GW @ R3600 or R7000 for an original one from BMW?

What are your thoughts? Anybody have experience with the BPR branded pulley?

I've heard of this thing that you need to change the Alternator pulley for warranty purposes but the chap I spoke to at JSN said he has never heard of changing that out....and apparently doesn't have the part listed for my 2011?

Have you requested a price from Beras Motor Spares?

Thanks ShaunB. I did contact them. The guy couldn't tell me what brands they have available, but mentioned they were German brands. One for R1800 and the other for R2600. I am not too sure what to make of it if he is not able to confirm the brand.
