I had both, in various models, there's about 1 - 2l / 100km difference with the 320d being the more fuel efficient one obviously. (comparing manual vs manual or auto vs auto)
Driven conservatively the 330d is not far off. My modded 330d gets me very similar consumption to a standard 320d on the open road (if not slightly better).
Here's the consumption at the end of trip to Durban.
i have a 320D e90 i get around 6.6L/100km everyday driving. they realy fun nd realible cars to own. I had x3 2.0D and enjoyed every minute of driving it.

With spirited driving it goes to around 10l/100km. On the open road, with a "feather foot", I can get it to low 5's if I drive around 100km/hr. It all depends on how you drive.

How convenient that mine is for sale. And if you don't buy mine, at least I can sell you some Promotec software for another car to improve consumption  Just kidding - I'm sure I sound like a Bl00dy opportunist.
But anyway, on a serious note, if you can afford a 330d, it is sooooo much better than a 320d (which is not bad to start off with) and while real life consumption is slightly worse, the fun factor is so much more.
