e90 air filters (do we get the cone type)

I came across this the other day...

seems the euro e90 comes with a cone type paper filter... im thinking of making a custom intake if the filters are available in SA

the advantage would be that the filter will have more surface area so could give more flow... also because it is paper it will not let more dirt in like after market filters :)

as far as i can see the e90 came with two filters:

anyone know what cars came out with the cone type filter?

No one :bawling:

maybe some one with an e90 can look under the bonnet...

the air box with the 'cone' has screws on top to open the air box and opens upwards...
the other has an air box that opens towards the front bumper...

here is a pic of the cone type air box:

this is the panel type air box:

if anybody has a chance please have a look and see which you have :)

let me know what car/year and what box you have...

the 320i filter is too small :) (forgot to mention that) so it has to be the one from the 6 cyl 323+ :)

Well you asked about the E90 :) you didnt specify.. but I am sure if the 320i has it then the bigger ones will have something similar

Hmmm, I'm not convinced that a cone has more surface area... Go work it out. I had this argument before and the answer was quite obvious that the flat filter had more area and was more space efficient, but the specific filters in question might be different...

On our 323i we have the cone filter, i have the old filter somewhere and will take a pic and post it later.
Our engine bay filter box looks like the one in the first pick with the screws on the sides.
Its a 2007 e90 323i sports pack

my original filter (e46) is: 178x244mm (43432mm^2)

if you open up the round filter it will be: 543.22x135mm (73334.7mm^2)

e90 flat filter: 292x231mm (67452mm^2 if it was rectangle but it has a corner cut out)

in this case the round one is bigger...

and quite a bit bigger than my e46 filter :)

It would seem so. However, the calculations is not that simple, the number of fins and depth of these fins are far more important, and it is a much more efficient system in square format. Easiest would be if you have a used one of each and cut out the paper and measure it. Of course, it only matters if the engine is suffocating, which I doubt.

should look like this :)

the fin height looks pretty similar to me... but i do not have the fin hight of the round one :(

from what i can see the 1st e90 came out with the flat panel then they changed to the round one so im pretty sure the air filter should flow better... ill see if i can get some to cut up, but im not sure its necessary...

All e46's that I have seen so far (including the 318i) use the same filter element as the e46 M3 so I can't really see the purpose of changing the filter if it is good enough for the monster of an engine in the M3, the best and cheapest you could do would be to just replace your box with the one from an M3 (you would probably need to change the MAF as well as the pipes are a lot fatter on the M3)

its more prep for the supercharger than anything... on 0.5 bar my engine will be sucking as much as a 3.7l so i will need more flow... im also thinking of using the rectangle type thats on the e92 M3

also if you look at how much people want for the M3 box and how much a new maf will cost it does not make sense

people do get a small gain from CAIs but im not sure its worth the cost in most cases... it makes sense for me because i will need more flow but i dont want dirt in my engine :)

If your engine will be sucking in so much air you would probably need to upgrade to the 330i (maybe 325i as well, not sure though) or M3 MAF in anyhow as the ones on the other e46 engines are really small and will probably restrict flow.

you right, but it should be easy enough to make the hole in the end bigger when it gets that far :) for now i just want a decent CAI with a big enough filter so i dont have to remake the CAI later because i have the wrong filter...

Moranor...rennzport sells fifferent types of filters and two types of cone filters for the e90. The cone you are referring to is specially made to fit a bigger, freeflow airbox. I will post some pics of the two cone filters and the carbon intake box that we sell with it...just need to unpack it from its wrapping...:excited:... hopefully it will help you with the development of your design.

awesome twins :) cant wait for the pics

Sandekur how much is that going to cost you?

Would depend if he is going to do it the proper way & buy it or do it the SA way & find someone with it & steal it
