E90 330D - won't start

Hey guys I am confused. There are a number of discussions talking about removing the battery for ten minutes to reset computer.

I understood if you remove the battery all hell breaks loose and your computer settings go, alerts happen etc and so you have to pay BMW dealer a considerable sum to reset the whole car? Is this not true?

Further to that BMW claim if you replace battery they have to tell computer a new battery is installed and so recharging rate changes, and nominal voltage to start figure changes?

Wish I could add more value here.

I let my E90 330d battery run a bit down one time and the car didn't even want to unlock. Nevermind start. So using the key I opened the car and charged via the engine bay terminals (as to use the fuses for protection) and car started fine after that.

In response to DrB0b737 you are right in saying that a new battery will need to be coded to your car. So that the car knows how to charge the battery (different duty cycle on the alternator)

I haven't managed to get this to work using inpa yet but I want to. I feel we should be able to DIY this as well. The stealers are just smiling :(

Thanks for that it confirms it. Ok so I am in Australia and just purchased a 320D 2008 model E90 runs beautifully as I do highway driving so I am getting about 5 liters /100 km. One issue why I am looking at battery threads is that, the low battery warning lights comes on after five minutes when I have parked the car, stopped the engine and leave ignition on to start updating and customizing iDrive and Business Navigation unit.
Does this means:
1. Battery is on the way out? (Called previous owner he said battery light has been going for a year yet car perfectly no stalling or low battery issues)
2. If this is original battery then there should be no false warnings?
3. If battery has been replaced (car only done 60K in six years) then should not all battery warning lights disappear?

Any ideas anyone apart from voltmeter check car running 13.8v on charge and battery car stopped voltage at 12.2v.

Hi guys

I've got an E90 330D which is 100% standard, no mods.

Earlier tonight I went down to the video store which is about 1.5kms from home, got a dvd and when I got back into the car to go home, I put the remote into the dash(everything lights up normally), put my foot on the brake and pressed the start button as usual. Nothing happened. All I could hear was athat normal click sound as if I had pressed the start button with my foot off the brakes. I got the car home and thought it might be the battery which I tested and it read 12.3 volts so its not that(I've put it on the trickle charger now anyway). I have no idea what the problem could be as ita completely dead, doesn't try to start at all. Checked the battery terminals. Also checked for errors on the on board computer. Only error was low windscreen washer water so that's topped up now and its clear of errors on the screen.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

TC
Hey TC, what was the outcome on your starting problems? Your school fees will help me if I get stuck with the same problem :)

i have an e90 330d '06 model that will crank non stop and never fire up.
this is after buying a new DME and replacing all six injectors with good used ones as advised by the mech. never really noted the error codes on the diagnosis but it was something like ''injector 2 and 4 failed to activate''.
after deleting, the error will go to injector 3 and 6 for e.g
the mech is so much convinced its the injectors which i am sure its not, that he has not bothered to test the fuel pump and the HPFP which i am suspecting might be the culprits.

i bought the car as a non runner from a friend and i am aware it used to cut out at speed, would crank and not fire up but would eventually start up after a good few tries and patience.

i love the car although i have never even driven it, but i know what it can do since i have driven BMW all my life

any advice will be highly appreciated cos i am way past my budget and have to import parts from RSA which is not easy

Hey Ghost I wish I was in durbs now would come down to assist you in a heartbeat, when you read this and you got the car home check the following connect a multimeter to the battery and check the voltage as you try to start it, a friend of mine had a dead battery but when checking the voltage it would read 12.7v but as soon as he tried starting the car the voltage would drop to 0 thought it was the starter trned out the battery was faulty

Hey team, all fixed. Replaced battery and registered, everything all clear and no battery warnings. The battery was on the edge for over a year would you believe. Charging to just 12.3V but discharging if I did a lot of stop/starts for the day. Glad I don't have auto stop/start as that would have killed battery real quick
