E90 323 Fuel Consumption improvement

Hi Guys

i get around 450km from 55lt of fuel.

the car says its averaging 11.3l/100km.

this is too heavy for me, as my corolla does 550km from a 45l tank under the same driving conditions (daily commute to work and back).

would aftermarket software help make the car a bit light on fuel?

or is there any other options out there?

Thanks

I had a pre-lci 323i, used to average around 11.4l/100 km in town. Open road it used to return around 8.6l/100km.

Was a gem of a car, loved it. Remember in town it will probably use more than a corolla, but wont be as great a drive.

I went from my pre-lci 323i to a lci 320d.

I have a pre lci 323i automatic and I usually average anywhere between 11 and 11.5 and on long trips around 8.5l /100kms. I generally get 500kms to a tank of fuel. I love my car.

Thanks for responses guys.

i do understand the consumption is normal (11 - 11.5), but has anyone tried anything to improve the consumption?

Well I have a pre lci 330i e90 and I get 11.5L/100km and then 8L/100km on the freeway.

It all depends on your driving, the area you drive in, the amount of uphill, downhill, how you accelerate from 0 to hero, do you floor it or just ease it off till you reach speed, how much do you stand in traffic or still, how many times do you move.

Lets put it this way, if I drive on a weekend day, 9 - 10L/100km to work
If I do the same route on a week day, 11 - 13L/100km.

There is a lot of factors that plays here, try and slowly speed up, keep a constant speed, try and avoid traffic where possible and see if it improves. It should

Improvement would probably be done with a decat and software but chances are it wont dent it much. Comparing your consumption to a corolla is the worst thing you can do, what is it a 2.0l or 1.8l? Up against a 2.5l 6 cylinder luxury german sedan. If you want anything lower than 10s in traffic get yourself a 320d or 330d which will give you between 7.5 and 8.5 in traffic and about 6 on open road. Tune it and add a dp and you looking at low 5s on long distance trips. Not to mention that it will also be able to dish out hidings to alot of the hot hatches.

Unfortunately these are not "econoboxes" and therefore it is unfair to compare it to the Corolla. Completely different animal! These six cylinders do not like pottering around at town speeds, and certainly not sit in traffic - they eat fuel then. Once you have them at open road speeds they come into their own though. My 330i pre-LCI can manage less than 9 l/100 km on the open road, probably better if I really try, but so far the worst I've had on a tank is 12.5 l/100 km for mixed driving but mostly town. Software is not going to make a difference, and if it is claimed to, they are either lying, or over stating, just like with performance gains. BMW has already pretty much optimised these engines for performance and economy - and that's not such an easy thing for essentially a NA performance orientated car.

Thanks for the response Philip.

dont get me mistaken guys, im not comparing the corolla and the bmw.
im looking at the way they use fuel, my corolla puts out more power than the bmw, and its almost 20years old.

Looks like il have to stick with this fuel consumption then.

What mods do you have on your corolla to get above 130kw and still maintain the consumption? RSI or RXI?

RSi bud.

it has a rebore on the block and a set of mild cams.

a drive from jhb to durban with one passenger and minimum luggage gets me about 720km of 45lt.

720 of 45lt? :skit:

You cannot compare a 1600cc corolla that weighs much less than a 2.5 straight 6 luxury sedan bud.

That's like me comparing my 3.6 v6 2ton fat Dodge to my 320d.

The Corolla is featherweight compared to the BMW, and being a smaller capacity, and two less cylinders, by default it is sipping less fuel. Many years ago I had a similar vintage Corolla, but the 1.6i GLE and it was very good at being economical and had decent performance for what it was back then. But, put some passengers in it, and that "performance" was gone. The BMW is already heavier, so putting in passengers will have a smaller effect, and you have more torque (Corollas not so big on torque).

Economy was also to the same extent affected as the BMW, but on a smaller scale. What I mean by this is that on the open road it was capable of 7 or so l/100 km fairly easily and in town driving not much higher than 10 l/100 km. So a litre or so more to a 100 km on the BMW is not too bad actually. I drive my 330i very much based on what the econometer shows me, and over the years have been able to find what works best at saving fuel and avoiding things that waste fuel, the problem is that while the car sits still or is moving at really slow speeds, it's just wasting fuel. I am pretty sure that if the Corollas had an econometer too, you would be surprised at how much fuel it would be capable of using when putting foot, but probably a lot easier to drop back down to a frugal manner. It's like the "target" 10 l/100 km marking on the BMW's econometer.

had one, only thing I did to improve consumption was trade it in on a 330d,same year model, best thing I ever did.

not much you can do on a 323i,and really not worth it

Nice, tuning makes a difference.
