Good morning all

On my current 320I - E90, I have been using shell ultra for the last year, not once did the oil level drop or required me to top up in 20 000km. A few weeks ago after my vehicle was serviced by BMW, 1300km later it needs a 1lt of oil. The dealer advised me he used Castrol professional.

Should i be concerned about this? Do I need to contact BMW ?

I don't know if something is wrong with that oil or the 320i's. My girlfriend has a 2010 e90 320i and every 1500km or so, it requires a litre of oil, the dealership recommended the very same oil.

My service interval was brought down to 18000km and that hasnt dropped yet, if it takes a 1lt of oil ever 1300km then i should be filling +/- 8lt of oil till the next service.

I never topped up oil when i used shell ultra.

I would say to have the car checked for oil leaks - the E90 320i is prone to them.

When I had mine it had oil leaks around the sump gasket, oil filter seal, tappet cover gasket (twice) and vacuum pump seal. You won't notice any leaks under the car due to the bottom engine covers and I think the vacuum pump seal leaks oil onto the manifold which causes the oil to burn away.

I used to joke that I will never get the oil sludge problem as most of the oil leaks out before it can turn to sludge

I will speak to the dealership, the car is booked in for a long list of problems. I really hope they are able to sort this out.
