Dont...

If you have to get a 320, at the very least get it in manual.

They are underpowered...

Look at a 323 or something, the fuel consumption will be the same if not better.

I know,

Can you not find a manual.

Ask the dealer if you can borrow the car for a day, and see if you can live with it in the long haul, they really are underpowered, with very little in terms of performance mods available.

If you work at the bottom of a mineshaft you will find its pretty quick on the way to work actually. Might be a bit slow on the trip home though.

I am a huge fan of a 320, and would gladly buy one as long as they throw in a free "d"

If you do take the 320i, your choice your money, enjoy the car boet. Its a great car, a BMW after all.

Do you prefer auto to manual? Manual is actually much smoother.

Sabretooth has got a point

It is a really nice car, and still a BMW, with the top end being close or over the 200km/h easy.

Problem is the low down grunt when you need to overtake or take a hill, there it lacks, annoyingly so, specially with the auto box.

If you can live with that, go for it, but be sure that you can, or else your going to want to sell it in 6 months time, and wont be able to offload as your settlement is still way higher then book.

I have found BMW's 4 pots more heavier on fuel than a I6. The N42 and N46 motors have to be kicked, slapped and punched before getting its a$$ moving whilst the I6 is up and running before the road side spaza guys try to sell you a Smurf teddy bear.

But once the 4 pots are moving they are a joy to drive, so as said above, your money your choice. The drive is just alot better in a I6 BMW.

i agree with the above. mine is manual and i enjoy it much better than the auto. the minimal torque does get frustrating when overtaking (or trying to) but honestly i dont mind at all as the car is a cruiser/family car so i dont rev it to redline much (at all actually) and thoroughly enjoy it. its got enough power (for my purpose) and i get from point A to B comfortably. but i think its time to upgrade now so looking to sell it soon.

i guess it all comes down to what you looking for in the end.

EDIT: if i had to go back in time, i'd rather take the 320d though.

My father has an Auto(320i), I have a Manual(320i). I must admit i was looking for the Auto but I’m glad i got the alternative. I've played around with the gearbox in Sport and Normal mode and didn't really enjoy it. In both modes it just feels unresponsive. Maybe I’m bias but that’s just my 2 cents.

You okes talking about torque and climbing hills and overtaking, reminds me of back in the day.

I just felt sick here for a moment, thinking of those long trips in my Sloyota trying to go over the pass. Third gear flat foot, 80km/h. Man That was frustrating.:biglol:

Well,

Once at speed, I did 1500 km in an N42 this weekend past, and at 120 there is plenty to go, even in 5th.

But getting through the first 2 gears is painful, and thats where you miss a bigger motor.

My wife has a 320i manual.we have it for about 5 months. Not the fastest but a great car nevertheless.I would recommend a manual any day.

I must admit though I do have a slight regret about not giving the 320d more thought:fencelook:

Well I just got a 320i about a month ago, and I am really happy with it!
It's a manual though. I had an E46 318i before this, same engine, but it was automatic. The difference is huge!!

Yeah it hasnt got the power of a straight 6, but I find it more then enough in most situations. I suppose because it is manual you have much better control over it and allows you to use its full potential, and coming from an auto, is what makes it really enjoyable.

That said, if you can go for a straight 6 do it! I would. My mom has one, really fun and there is a big difference in power, but I dont think the 320 is a slouch at all.

Its seriously underated in my opinion.

this topic has been beaten to death, if you feel the car is perfect for you ad your budget allows you only a 320i with enough motorplan and mileage, condition etc, do it.

there is nothing worse than basing your purchase on opinions of others and regrets thereafter. surely, an i6 motor is definitely better but fuel consumption is worse on it but then everyone drives different and depending on your driving style, will be your fuel consumption.

the manual isnt bad and if power was a huge thing for me, i would be sitting with 6 cylinder car now but my usage of the car doesnt warrant a 6 cylinder and the fuel consumption. i love the fact of having a BMW, its solidarity and safety, comfort and the fuel consumption has been better on mine recently.

my dream was always on S3 and a3 series Individual, i now have the Individual and hard for me to even think of leaving BMW. the best is sitting in traffic and looking doen at your steering wheel and that blue and white badge glares at you, then you know you are at home.

I agree. Buy what you can afford. I bought a '08 320i Steptronic / Auto last year. Never owned anything before that handles and drive like this. It does 9.2 seconds when you shift the gears and 9.8 seconds in auto mode. Ample for my purposes. Cruises nicely at 140 and achieves an indicated 220 with no fuss. Consumption in mixed driving 8.9 l per 100 km. Mileage now 71 000 km and very happy with my purchase. Had a blow out @ 140 with RFT's towing a trailer and would not have known if the I-drive did not tell me. Can not afford more car and peace of mind for what I paid for it.
