E90 320d

Hi there,

On Wednesday I will be test driving a 2006 320d sportspack.

It has 100,000km on the clock. Turbo was changed at 80,000km. FSH at BMW no accidents blah blah blah.

Its through a BMW dealer. Price is R145,000.

Same dealer has an E90 323i sportspack for R155,000. 114,000 on the clock.

Is that a good price for the diesel? Is it true that the 323i and 320i have a problematic motors? Friend of mine told me this but not too sure if he's talking out his @ss.
I know more or less the pros and cons of owning a diesel but is it worth it to take out an aftermarket warranty? Turbos cost a lot to replace but the warranty probably aint cheap either.

Any input is appreciated.

E90 didn have major turbo probs, so jus take care of it (warm it in the mornings and give it a few mins to cool before switching off) ..but like a petrol diesels need their maintenance and after many km's will one day need a new turbo..but petrols have their troubles at high mileage too..soo I think it balances out in the end
...did'n hear of any major issues with 320 engines..the 323's 325's did have some issues with eatin oil etc..
..price seems reasonable..take a look on autotrader for similar aged cars with similar mileage and compare the prices..GL..the traktors awesomely fun to drive tho :thumbs:

I got the same diesel you looking at. They are excellent cars. I had my turbo changed recently. I promise, you won't be disappointed in the 320d
Low on diesel, high on power.

I had a 323i, sold it on 98 000km, and it was going still like a brand new car. My diesel now on 34 000km, and not a days problems.

BMW's are not problematic cars, given you look after them.

I have been looking around and this 320d seems to be reasonably priced hence setting up the test drive for Wednesday. I have seen a few going for R160,000 upwards with similar mileage.
Also found a nice sportspack 330d but its R200,000. A bit too much for me right now unfortunately.

What about getting an aftermarket warranty plan? Is it worth it?

Currently 200 000km plus. I bought it to drive it, so I do and I love driving it.
You must get a warranty plan. Turbo's can get expensive and that will save you alot.
Good luck with your test drive and I am sure after the test drive, you are gonna tell us you bought it.

Currently 200 000km plus. I bought it to drive it, so I do and I love driving it.
You must get a warranty plan. Turbo's can get expensive and that will save you alot.

Good to hear these cars do last because I have heard of people going through turbos like underwear.
They must not have looked after the vehicle properly.

After market warentee. This is a debatable question and I was dead set against it. when I got my car i was forced to take it. Looking back I paid R8000 for it and was added to my finance.

Now with my turbo going and all the kak I have been having i must be hones the warentte has paid out R13k in total out of a R40k already. Yes there is a dispute now with the dealer but is a matter being dealt with.

So the warentee has already paid R4k more than it was worth and there in alone i have scored.

Only thing is read the fine print carefully but having been against it all allong I can now say I am happy I did get it.

The biggest thing to focus on is how mauch do they pay for a relevant repair/part and what will the shortfall be.
Eg of mine was.
Turbo Warentee R5000
actual cost for part was R8265
Labour around r2k
But i have the smaller warentee.

They would have paid more but my claim limit was R10 000 per incident on the engine and everything went bang at once.

They did not pay for the clutch as it is deemed a ware and tare item cost was R6000
Secondary diesel pump was R4000 they paid R3000.




But then again I got the lemon so all you guys didn't need to worry/

Another question:

Is it better to get an auto in a 320d? The 1 I am testing tomorrw is an auto. Is this auto box suited for this car and is it reliable?

How often do you have to service an auto box like this and does it work out to the same as maintaining a manual i.e. changing the clutch, etc
R6000 is a lot to replace a clutch but I heard horror stories about fixing auto boxes.

that should be the 130kw version of the the e90 320D...


The cars are excellent. great power for the engine size...


theyre much more reliable than the E46 320D's. Auto should be just fine.


I am a major fan of SA Warranties. also bout R8k for 2 years, Unlimited KM's. They have different packages, but theyre definitely worth it. They cover many of the major components.

Definitely go for the 320d. If youre unhappy with the power after a while, then its some software and the car makes alot more power. its alot easier to gain more power out of the 320d than out of the 323i.
