e90 320d Squealing brakes

Hi

Lately I've started noticing that as I'm coming to a stop I am getting this horrible squeal from the back of the car, just as it's about to stop. Sounds like the pads are finished, but they're not. Wondering if it could be coming from the handbrake? Not sure how the handbrake mechanism on the e90 works though?

Anyone else had this issue before?

Thanks

I had a similar issue. I tightened my hand break and it squeked slightly for a while but eventually went away. If you have not adjusted your hand break so I doubt it would have tightened by itself. Correct me if I am wrong. It could however be dirt or dust on your actual breaks. Give it a week and see if it cleans itself.

hmmmm. Now that you mention it. My brake noise also went away after a handbrake adjustment.

Adjusting the handbrake is not the hardest thing to do. Just takes some time to get it right.

You need to lift both back wheels from the ground take your car out of gear and drop your handbrake. Take off 1 bolt from each tire. Then spin the wheel until you see what looks like a little gear normally at 11 and 1 oclock. Rotate the gear with a screw driver until the wheel locks (I believe right side is down and left up to tighten). Loosen the gear I believe 3 notches and the breaks should just just be catching. Do another notch and it should not catch. Repeat on the other side and you should be done. Both wheels should lock evenly and make sure your handbrake locks on flat ground at about 5 clicks. If so then all should be good.

I do suggest however to watch a video. Its easier to understand from visual tutorials.

It could be the handbrake, but to eliminate dust on your brakes as a potential issue, stop at a garage take the air compressor and blast the brake callipers with air this should remove any dust build up. If this doesn’t solve it then it could potentially be the handbrake. However on all the cars I have worked on brake squeal was mainly caused by the brake pads.
