E90 320d LCI Battery issue

Hi guys,

Had an issue this morning where the car didn't want to start. There was no battery signal stating low, the car just battled to crank as if the battery is low. My other concern is the loop error which is the glow plugs came on at the time. My neighbour jump-started me and the glow plug error is no more... There are no current errors..

My question is, with the e90 lci's surely there must be a battery low signal like the f30's?
and should I be worried about the glow plug error?

Anyone know whats the cost of a replacement battery in GP and being a 2012 model would the car need to be paired to the new battery?

Thanks in advance

Replaced mine 3-4 months ago. I think the price from ABM was around R1900 after discount. @"Danny@DSCmotorsport" did the registration.

Did yours tell your or give you an indication that the battery is low on the OBD etc?

Nope it kept dying after even long drives to charge. I think the lockdown and considering it was the original battery, caused it’s demise. Served me well for 10 years.

Just contacted ABM, There are two variants for the car. They quoted R2700 for the white battery and R4830 for the black battery which my car has... Thats abit crazy!

Can the "black battery" not be purchased elsewhere for less?

So i have the more expensive AGM battery on my car.

Battery Centre has a Raylite, The specs are exactly the same as OEM. 12V 80AH 800A for R3545 incl

Capital batteries has a Varta blue dynamic F21, Same specs as above for R3950 incl

Is the BMW OEM battery justifiable at R1250+ more or should i choose one of the replacements above?

Just a qeustion. Have you pulled the stickers and tried to top it up with some distilled water (I add some acid also. Get it from Middas like R80)and place it on charge for 12 hours?

Personally I prefer Raylite from Battery Centre

I think Yulz9081 might be onto something wrt the lockdown and cars having stood for some time.
My car has now for the second time in 4 weeks refused to crank for the home commute from the office. I've had a dead cell in a battery be the cause for lots of head scratching before so I suspect that.
Will go have it tested tomorrow but will also likely have to replace it.
Could it be anything else?

Good spotting there Iceman!
My wife’s F30 gave some alarms and warning lights while driving in about January this year.
Only the hardware store was opened late evening, so I got a bottle of distill water and topped up all the cells that were dry. We were ready to replace the battery but thankfully 8 months later it’s still fine.

If it’s not too late will be worth the try!

I have saved x2 BMW batterys in this way. Remember the lower the acid level the less charge it will keep. I managed to get hold of a 2016 battery that the car gave a fault code. It took nearly a full liter of fluid(I add bit of acid and also water to each cell it helps) then I charge it and check it with Hydro meter till its ready. Using a hydro meter will also indicate if a cell is bad or not after a 12 to 24 hour charge.

Update on this - the battery test at Supa Quik confirms it's in good working order. According to their printed values it was as follows;
BATTERY TEST
Good battery
Volts: 12.73V
Measured: 573A SAE
Rating: 655A SAE
STARTER TEST
Normal
Volts: 11.15V
CHARGING TEST
OK
Volts: 13.91V

Did a load test too and according to the technician, the voltage drop under load is within spec.

I did read the fault codes and although there were some present, none had anything to do with battery.
So, the quest continues.

This is a Willard 658 90Ah that was in the car when I took ownership last year July.

Any comments on these values will be appreciated.

Those values are good, nothing to worry about. Your battery's state of health is at 87,48%. I had some starting issues with my e90 330i earlier this year. Also thought it was the battery, had it tested and it was okay. The issue on mine was the starter. However, it could also be a cam position sensor or the crank position sensor. Sensors would however normally give error lights on the dash. It could even be an issue with the CAS module (car access system). If I remember correctly, there are fuses for the CAS module and ignition which can also be checked, but I doubt that those fuses are your issue, because a fuse won't work intermittently once it is blown.

I'm not sure where in Gauteng you are, but you can try Willard Batteries (Battery Orbit) in Strubens Valley, Roodepoort. I have found them to have the best prices on Willard, but they also stock Varta.
