discussion E90 320d Fuel Consumption

Hi Everybody,

I have been registered a while on the forum but do not post much. I have recently purchased my first BMW and need some guidance. It is a E90 320d, LCI, Auto with 166 000km on the clock.

I have owned the car for about 2 weeks now and my consumption averages between 8.3 - 8.5 L/100km. I drive three days a week from Radiokop to Rivonia with flowing traffic. The car is stock as well. Is that consumption normal for the E90 320d or is there something to be concerned about?

Appreciate any help I can get.

Thank you,
Lewellyn

Hi bud, I know that Radiokop area has some crap traffic during peak hours in the morning and afternoons...that figure for combined sounds right given your trip because Sandton also has bad traffic too.

Has your car had its CAT removed by any chance yet? Also, once you are more used to the car your consumption would be a bit better as you drive it.

Try using about 3/4 tank to a full tank, use some diesel injector cleaner and see how it fairs. Many of the E90s also do MUCH better fuel consumption when you remove the CAT and for a DP and do software on it. Mine was not so heavy but then I had it mapped shortly after getting it and did the DP...on some highway trips, it was in low 4s with ease.

Good Afternoon

I have a 2013 120d Coupe Auto, and started experiencing heavy fuel consumption. (155 000 on the clock) The dealers removed the intake manifold and all the swirl flaps was broken, replaced the intake manifold with a new OEM part and my fuel consumption is back to +- 7.5L/100km.

I must also say that I have a lot of traffic on my daily commute from Brackenfell to Stellenbosch. In heavy traffic with aircon running my consumption increases to about 8L/100km.

Hey Bud,
Thanks for responding. Yeah I do sit in a fair amount of traffic mainly in the afternoons, the mornings are not that bad.

Could you perhaps recommend a diesel injector cleaner I should use? I will try this as a first option to see if it improves consumption. By the sounds of it, the second option would be to remove the CAT and go the DP and software route. Are there any other preventative maintenance I should do as I intend on keeping the car for a while?

Appreciate the help bud.

Try the Wynn's injector cleaner or even Wynn's Diesel Boost does the job and increases cetane levels marginally at the same time.

When you do software and the DP, they turn off the EGR in the tune which also reduces fuel consumption. Then you have the option of physically blanking off the EGR afterwards which should help even more. Just a heads up that doing this on mine did cause a bit more smoke but that may have been the file itself. Sold the car afterwards so didn't really investigate too much.

Thanks for the response bud. I will try the Wynn's diesel boost and see if that helps.

I visited Xcede performance when I took my car for an oil change and they also stated that they can turn off the EGR in the tune and its not necessary to do the blank off but if I wanted, I could do that.

I loved your car, I met you at the Mcdonalds in Rivonia when you were selling but could not come up with the balance in time :-(

Hey there - Have a 20d LCI manual - Fuel consumption at about 7.6L however have seen it climb to about 8.1L and the Mrs does have a heavy foot. So in all honesty it more or less could be right considering the traffic you experiencing.

Yulz is correct, do the Wynnz Diesel Injector cleaner...worked very well for my 1.6TDi Polo...Did it once on my 320d...both times made a difference.

Hey bud,
So then the consumption seems about right, going to try the Wynn's diesel cleaner as the guys recommended and see if that improves it somewhat.

My 2011 320D Auto used to average 8.2L/100km. That was with my daily route which is 6 km, robot to robot one way, so basically no highway what so ever.

After installing a downpipe it settled to 8.0 and never went over that. Long distance it got 6.1 with occasional flat full throttle.
My Manual 2007 same route averaged low 7's.

So seems about rite.
Im sure if you have to do even just a bit of highway driving your average will drop big time.

Like the guys said, every couple of months use some diesel injector cleaner (i only use Liqui Moly) and removing your cat which at your mileage and age will def be blocked, will most certainly help your consumption as well as make the car more driveable (picks up faster and faster from lower revs) you ahve also only had the car fro two weeks, so perhaps do a full service, especially make sure the Diesel/fuel filter has been changed.

I can't really speak for the E90's etc but I had a 2004 E46 330d a good couple years ago and it was also an Auto. Those were a little less economical than the E9x's but still not bad for their time.

What I noticed was that when it was an auto I would average 8 - 9L/100 km but after doing a manual 6 speed conversion the consumption went down into the 5's and even lower on highway driving. So it was quite a substantial change. The auto box was massive compared to the manual box and MUCH heavier! It was also 5 gears IIRC as opposed to 6 speed.
Anthony another member on this forum had the same car in black and in manual 6 speed, The mileage he would get to a tank compared to mine when mine was auto, eclipsed what I was able to get! It really did make a massive difference!

So what I am trying to say is that the auto box might be what's responsible for your higher fuel consumption.
