E90 320d EGR Coolant Thermostat

Hi all

I know I posted before but here is a post with a picture.

The thermostat end broke off and it is leaking water. Has any body else had a problem like this.

I must say I am rather annoyed as the car was at the Stealers for a service and they did not pick it up.

common issue, its R300 from goldwagen, and R10 for an O-ring from Bmw. get both, Diy and bleed a quick 30min job

As mentioned, common problem. Happened to my E90 320d after replacing the radiator.

What coolant do I use, I suppose it is better to stick to the BMW stuff.

Happened to me as well. The night before leaving on a long distance trip. Luckily I managed to contact a mech that night and arrange to bring my car in. BMW helderberg got the part within 2 hours from Cape Town. And the car was on the road in another 30mins.

I collected the part from Goldwagen. It is exactly the same as the one supplied by BMW.

Thank you all.
I have replaced the thermostat and I topped up with BMW coolant.
I opened all 3 bleed screws and pours the coolant in until coolant started coming out of the 2 near the motor. I then let coolant come out of the screw by the reservoir and closed it. I put the cap on and let the car idle for about 10 minutes. Will all the air be out now?

there is few youtube videos that give a fairly good tutorial on this
points that spring to mind, to remember are 1) engine running, 2) heater on, to circulate water throughout, 3) park on a slight upwards incline

Lol. This seems like a very common fault just happen to me. Hopefully i can get the part tomorrow.

I have maybe three or four of those old thermostats with housings in good condition but with the thermo stuck in the open position. I am however in Hermanus. Quite an easy job to change over the inner parts into the good housing. These parts fail on a regular basis. I have had this problem on about all the diesels i have had in my family the past few years and found that this thermostat and the main one usually need replacement. Recently bought an E60 530d and X3 2l diesel and am in the process of replacing the thermostats on both as they run cold.
