e90 320d auto vs manual longevity

in rushour driving my 320d auto rarely goes over 2500rpm before the gear change, and then i am not really going slow, still overtaking a lot of other cars. The revs are then approx 1750rpm @ 100km/h. 80% Rush hour driving.

So this made me think a bit when i drove with my step dad in his x3 2.0d yesterday, it does seem to be revved a bit higher during normal driving, maybe just his way of driving.

So here is my theory :
Given similar driving enviroments an auto 320d will be stressed less than a 320d manual, and if both are looked after properly and serviced when due, an auto version can last longer than a manual version, purely because the revs are kept lower over a long period. LESS TOTAL REVS = LESS WEAR

PS! This is just a theory

If I had to make the choice again, I would buy an auto. I personally think all BMW Diesels should be auto because of the low revs.
Other than that, I simply love it.

I recently drove a 318d Touring 6-spd manual in Europe for about 3 weeks.

If I had to buy a 3-series diesel, it would have to be with an autobox.

If you want a sporty car, buy a petrol engined model with manual box. If you want an economical low-stress commuter car, buy an auto diesel.

I never thought I'd have an auto.. GFs dad had a manual Audi 1.9Tdi and you were changing gears the whole time... so also by recommendation from our faithful sales consultant I took the auto and for traffic it's the best ever!! and if you learn how to shift them properly in manual mode they aint half slow either.. petrol performance cars on the other hand must always be manual!

The only thing is that the Clutch does not last for ever in City Driving on the manual :fencelook:

Something def wrong with your driving.
My wife is learning to drive and she was trying a few parking setups and next thing i hear, "I can smell something burning" My heart stopped for that moment. Saw smoke coming out by the gear lever. I just said
"That's enough for this year"

Let it cool down and all was good after that.

Indeed.. Killed 2 on the '07 Excl and 4 on the '09 LCI with 2 flywheels as well.. I dunno I blame the traffic? Very soft OEM clutches I think.. Have the auto tractor for the daily run now :joy:
