E87 N47 2007 120D Auto Electrical Issues (Dash)

Hoping for some advice.

2 years ago car was hijacked. Recently found after it was purchased off of Gumtree and an attempt to register it raised suspicions as the chassis and engine number were tampered with and the registration, number plate and license were not for a 1 series. Car returned as there was no insurance on it as it was not being used as owner died. Car had 50k KM's on the clock and tracker at the time of theft and in perfect condition. Not so much anymore.

I have gotten it back to mechanical goodness (BMW Quote over R100K, cost under R20k doing it myself) as the front suspension/subframe were totalled. Everything under the front and attached to wheels is now brand new.

How ever the speedo doesn't work. The Rev Counter/Fuel Gauge etc sometimes works dependant on bumps and corners etc. This also ties in with the seat belt ping and aircon usage which all only works when the rev counter is working. When it stops literally slam brakes or turn sharp or look for a speed bump and it might come back on and everything "seems" to work (Except the speedo, hooter, windscreen wipers front and back and the buttons on the steering wheel.)

I started looking at the electricals and found it was missing 32 fuses, yes you read that correctly 32 but everything seemed to work except my ODB reader (X431) cannot read it and cheapo hand helds only read the VIN. I went through all the fuses replacing everything and making sure they were all working etc. and now even less works. The Indicators stopped working, high beams and things like that.

I have checked the battery and alternator seems to be working fine (Done 300+KM's since returned getting all its paperwork sorted as it was found out of town) and earth connections in the boot and engine bay. Pulled the PDC out to check for water ingress and its dry as a bone. Everything in the box under the bonnet is connected and dry as is everything around the fuse box.

Last speedo reading says 77k KM's on the clock so hopefully not much more actual and still worth sorting out. Engine and gearbox and rear of car are mechanically perfect and since the front is now sorted its only the electrical issue but cash has been abused by the front suspension repairs and service kit and too many horror stories about being ripped a new one getting the electronics tested and sorted out so hoping to get as much done myself.

Any advice or suggestions on where to start looking?

Sounds like there's an issue with the JBE. This sits right underneath the fuse box behind the cubby.

Also, not all fuses are populated in the fuse box from factory.

Where you based?

Welcome to the forum! Post a little about yourself and your latest acquisition in the New Members Area. Some pics are always good. :)

As Ratslaaf said, not all the fuse positions are filled when the car is assembled - depends a lot on the options the car has.

It sounds to me like an intermittent connection - such as damaged wiring harness, loose ground etc. Get the codes read with some BMW software - there is usually a lot more detail in the fault codes.

Thanks.

I fitted fuses as per the diagrams so there are still lots of open fuse sockets but all the correct amperages and needed fuse sockets are filled.

@applehero Not much to say about myself :) Latest acquisition is a few years old. Was purchased new from BMW in 2007. Seldom used. Hijacked 2 years ago on a battery charging trip and recovered 2 weeks ago. Car looks like crap now outside. Inside still good. I can show pics of the bullet holes in it?

Using X431 iDiag. Doesn't see or cannot communicate with ECU or anything. Probably the next best thing to the actual BMW system (According to the experts and is not cheap.)

Based in Fourways.

Wow ok, so the car found its way back to you 2 years later? That's not something you see everyday. I agree, that makes the car a little special in its own way so worth the effort getting it perfect again.

Best suggestion I can make is bring the car past me so I can have a look at some of these issues. I suspect a gateway issue at the very least. It seems to support the symptoms you're having.

Decided to take it to BMW Stealers as without indicators etc its gonna be dangerous to drive around. They cannot detect the car..... happy to pull it apart and find the issue but apparently they replace all the computers and work it that way so extreme costs are likely.

Does anyone know of a company that tests and repairs the JBE because I unplugged it and visually inspected it and cannot see any faults but it could be something simple like one of the many Relays has gone (Always check mechanical devices first rule being applied here.) After plugging it back in less worked than before. Now cannot open or close the boot or rear windows or lock the car etc. Rev Counter and Fuel Gauge now totally dead not even bumps are kicking them back in.

Also going to start pulling fuses to see if I can get it back to what it was.

I would really suggest you take it to OBDWorx - even if to give you an idea of what you are getting in for.

Feedback. 1x E87 BMW 2007 in 100% running order. Bodywork and respray now next target.

Fixed it myself after looking through the schematics and diagrams and realised all the issues are within the Junction Box Eletrika (JBE) as pointed out in previous posts and apparently are big issues on the older E87's and probably E90's as well as they share.

I basically pulled the board out and tested all the relays which worked fine so checked everything else and tested again. Took it to BMW who couldn't even identify the car on their systems and brought it right back.

I started in with the fuses again as I realise some things were working before I sorted the fuses and now nothing was except the engine. No windows, no dash, no alarm, no door locks, nothing but the engine starts and gearbox is fine. No difference so put them all back where needed.

I pulled the JBE out again and decided seeing I was probably going to have to replace it again and even getting it tested and "possibly" repaired and programmed I couldn't actually do any more damage as essentially the car still runs without it even plugged in. I cleaned the crap epoxy/lacquer coating they put on off so I could test the relays again properly and then realised the solder around the posts was coming off. The idiots used that lead free solder garbage which everyone knows is crap!

I started in with my reworking station and basically heated and resoldered all the pins and everything I could get to that carried large current (Initially everything sometimes worked and then not so it looked like something was breaking down or losing contact) and eventually plugged it back in. Immediately the dance of joy started.

You can probably see where I did most of the working on the solder removal and then reapplying leaded solder.

Glad you got it sorted. I am always partial to a Circuit Board. :=):
