E83 3ld X3 transfer case actuator gear stripped

Saw this for the first time in the flesh, a stripped transfer gear in the actuator drive. Friends father in law's X3 started driving funny and felt like it was two wheel drive with the one back wheel spinning on slight up ramp with loose surface. Also, the transfer case light as well as the abs and handbrake (i think) lights came on on the dash. Fortunately i have a few of those gears that i bought a few years back and could replace the stripped gear with a new one. Car is driving fine now with no more lights on on the dash. What worries me though is that the gear was stripped in three places? Normally it should be only one place as the gear only wears on about one third to a half of the gear. Have told the friend that the drive motor itself could be suspect causing the stripped gear. Time will tell.

As I understand it ...that $5 gear wheel only is used at a portion. Its been said that if the same gear wheel were to be turned to the un-used portion this would correct your problem.
It can be done...ive done it! However, it only lasted me for a year and then I'm back at where I began. I must didn't turn the gear wheel to just the right position.
In your case the previous owner was lucky or smart enough to position the gear in just the right position 2 additional times.

Had this problem a couple of years ago, ordered a new actuator gear, made out of carbon fibre material unlike the original plastic, apparently it's indestructible, spent less than R500 for it @ Ebay, took more than a month if not 2 to get to me, on the up side they sent 2 units to me by mistake. switching the unit was a 20min easy job, there's youtube tutorials on this. Fault went away immediately, no problems since then. Sold the other unit to my friend for R1000. This a X5 E70 though, but same part.
