2011 125i I was paying R1372 with Santam, now R870 with Miway for the same cover.

I believe however, when it come to claims Santam pays without much of a fuss MiWay and others not so sure.

To better answer your question, I have a few questions:
1. What is your age?
2. Is the car parked in a locked garage?
3. What is your excess that goes with the R1300 premium?
4. Have you claimed on a car accident in the last 3years and what was the claim amount?

1. What is your age? 32
2. Is the car parked in a locked garage? parked under cover in a gated area - flats
3. What is your excess that goes with the R1300 premium?
excess is like R6000
4. Have you claimed on a car accident in the last 3years and what was the claim amount?
i have but the car insured was under my father's name. i think it was 2 years ago. girl drove into me.

i am with santam. would prefer to stick with them as they have given the best service to us thus far.

aah, bingo!

if you had no previous insurance record (ie you were under your dad's insurance) your insurance will be skyhigh for a few months or a year, after that depending on your insurer you can ask for a reassessment to lower either your excess, installments or both.

At that point you should start shopping around for new insurance as you will have a record and continuous cover.

But yes, R1300 with a R6000 excess is not that great.

Get a broker, I got a guy from this forum, he got me quotes R500 lower than I was getting myself.

Parking in a locked garage made a significant difference to my premiums.

Any claim where you were involved, even if you were not the policyholder, will affect your history.

I would suggest asking them to bump your excess to 10k, then see what the monthly saving in premiums would be. If you take monthly savings x12, and it is less than the 4k increase in excess, then rather bump the excess. This argument falls apart if you claim within the first year.
