E82 120d Downpipe etc

Morning Guys,

I'm still new to BMW, diesel and the forum so apologies if this has been asked a million times.

First things first, are there any 1 series or BMW car clubs in Cape Town? And who are the main guys to go to for BMW specific mods? Rennzport has came up alot when asking around.

Everyone is telling me to get a downpipe fitted, so I would like some info as to what this actually is. The second thing everyone is talking about is getting a decat. And finally then to do the software.

My biggest concerns is if this will throw any error codes and if there is any long term damage?

Finally, I've seen a few modified diesels blowing out silly amounts of soot, at what stage during the mods does the crazy smoking start?

Sorry for the long post!

Thanks

A downpipe is basically the section of the exhaust that runs down from the turbo to the exhaust itself. When doing a downpipe, the cat/dpf is removed and the flow of gasses happens more freely,so exhaust temperatures run cooler and you will gain a bit of torque and throttle response.

If I am not mistaken, your car doesn't have a sensor that needs to be "fooled" in the cat,so no errors or anything should appear when fitting a downpipe.

The huge amounts of soot from diesels is usually a result of quite aggresive tunes via software,so with a "mild" map and downpipe you should not really see much smoke. But the smoke is worth it when the car pulls as well as a mapped 20d does.

When I fitted my downpipe no error codes were thrown. performance wise the throttle response was slightly better. I haven't had any issues with it to report on my side.

I have an RK tune on my car as well. There is a puff of smoke that comes out when dropping a gear. The only heavy smoke I have noticed is when I downshift and my foot is flat on the accelerator.

From my experience I would definitely recommend fitting a downpipe and getting a custom tune.

Correct me if im wrong, is fitting a downpipe the same as decatting the car?

It is loosely the same idea as a decat.A downpipe basically removes the cat by replacing the whole section with a larger diameter "pipe" with better bends that result in a better flow.

Okay thanks for all replies so far.

My next question, I know a diesel has no point in installing a BOV, but does a downpipe amplify that woosh sound you sometimes get between gears on a diesel? The little boy in me likes turbo noises:smilebounce:

The dowpipe will definitely give you a much clearer spooling sound, you will definitely hear it a lot more. If you want even more of a turbo spool sound, removing one of your exhaust boxes would do the trick.

On my 330d I removed the middle silencer box and fitted a 76mm downpipe. The sound changed quite a bit and the turbo can be heard clearly.

Obviously a 6-pot sounds completely different than a 4-pot, but here’s an idea of what my car sounds like -

I spoke to Profit Exhaust in Cape Town to get a downpipe fitted, so that will be the first mod.

Is there any other guys in CPT that I can call regarding a downpipe?
Rennzport unfortunately does not have anything for my vehicle, apart form the 1M bumpers.

I have also heard of guys fitting a bigger intercooler. Is there any major difference in performance noticed?

What sort of power are you making with current mods you have on your car?

I don't know about the bigger intercooler, personally i would put water meth before a bigger intercooler.
Currently I am running stock turbo, stock intercooler, pretty much a stock engine. only mods I have is a 76mm downpipe with a 63mm straight pipe exhaust with a silencer muffler back box.
The last time I had my car on the dyno I pushed 145kw and 495nm at the wheel

Performance wise...i would just get the latest Racechip tune and keep the rest of the 120d stock.

A few cosmetic stuff here and there but you not gonna churn much out of this motor unless you prepared to spend on a bigger turbo. For bigger power a 330d will be best suited.

If you plan on keeping the car a while I’d go for a custom map over any plug and play chip.

I won’t venture into comparing individual tuners or plug and play companies, but a custom map will always outperform a chip as it is written for your specific car instead of a generic map for all cars of the same model.

Just my 2c.

Did you manage to get the downpipe fitted? Are you also doing software at the same time? or just a downpipe for now?
