E70 X5M S63

Hi Guys,

Im looking to get another M car - the last was an e39 M5 that I replaced with a 987 Boxster. Both cars I drove and enjoyed for a year and sold for what I paid for them. Ive been looking at e60 M5, e46 M3 and e70 X5M. Its a third car so in a year I would not rack up more that 5,000kms. Budget up to R300k and I typically do all my own repairs (im comfortable doing rod bearings, working on SMG etc.)

Im not looking to buy a car and then spend R100,000 on maintenance as I wont keep it for ever and dont want to over capitalise so this makes me nervous of the M5.

E46 is tempting as prices are low enought to pick up a superb example and I believe that they are undervalued right now.

SO - what about the e70 with the S63? Plenty power, good ground clearance, excellent tow car ... seems like a great all rounder.

Ive seen a few around for between R250k and R350k with mileages up to 180,000kms.

Ive done a little homework and seems the s63 is pretty tough with problems restricted to injectors, turbo and to a lesser degree gummed rings?

What do you guys think?

Can only comment in relation to the S63 motor. I am on my second F10 M5 now. First was a 2012. Now i have a 2014 CP. and its a brilliant power plant. Loads of torque and power. I have not had a single issue with the motor itself other than it being a fuel guzzler in traffic. I know there was some problems with injectors on early models but many have been swopped out under motorplan. Maybe see if you can get the service records?
