I am in thee market for an E70 X5 and I see their isn’t mush difference in price between the 3.0D and 3.0SD (R20 000 - R30 000) how does service and maintenance cost compare between the two ?

The guys at Zambezi BMW told me there isn’t a big difference in performance between the two but?

The 3.0sd has two turbos just like the 335i or the 135i

If you are looking at future maintenance cost, replacing the turbos is double the money

I've been asking the same question earlier this year. Decided on the 3.0d as it has a single turbo so should be easier on the maintenance front. The 3.0d has plenty of power & torque so single turbo should be fine for most folks. So far loving the 3.0d

We have an xdrive35d and I can vouch for its performance and its reliability. Been solid since we got it at 20,000kms and is now at 65,000kms and have just done regular maintenance, nothing major.

Coming from an E53 4.4i, the 35d feels like it has lost some of its character though - even though it's much faster point-to-point.

Ayone own one out of motorplan ? 3.0d or 3.0sd

This is what might make me buy the SD

RaceChip Pro2
Tuning Changing

275 kW + 31%
374 HP + 31%
681 Nm + 17%

Compared to the 3.0D

RaceChip Pro2
Tuning Changing

227 kW + 31%
309 HP + 31%
618 Nm + 19%

These Racechip numbers are Red Bull :nonono:

309hp that's 227Kw in a X5 done by a simple input value twisting unit where we fight with sophisticated multi map Performance Software (about 30 different, and part of them 3-dimensional maps are newly programmed) to achieve "only" 220Kw in our High Performance "Miss" cars..... and that's with special Freeflow exhaust and Performance Intercooler

Must be a magic unit :roflol:
(BTW... we've tested Racechip units and threw them in the bin afterwards)

There are plenty of tuning companies getting good power from the SD

Maybe we are just a little bit behind?

How much does a normale service cost on your X5?

General servicing costs of servicing here in Malawi are shockingly high as we have to import parts from SA, we probably spend 10 to 15 thousand a year on basic maintenance.

Who is we? If you read my post again, I am talking about the 3.0d (referring to your post) NOT the 3.0sd or 3.5d (which are virtually the same thing)

No ... we are not behind ... actually seem to be far ahead because 700Nm out of the twin turbo engine is a bit weak

RaceChip is pretty good, used on my 3.0sd with nice results.
I wonder if the guys are still looking for advice from 4 years ago.
