E70 x5 3.0d strong diesel exhaust fumes

Hi guys. Im new here. Need some advice. I have a e70 3.0d x5. The exhaust fumes have a strong diesel odour. My 320d doesnt have that. Why is that? It still pulls fine. Gives around 9.7 km/l avg. It does short distance drives and then a long drive once a week. Cold starts if its 10 degrees or less outside it has a bit of white smoke and cranks few sec longer with a slight miss fire for a bit.

What can it be? Clogged CAT?

That starting issue might be the glow plug, and although it doesn't have a massive impact in our climate, it can make a difference when on its way out.

The fumes I'm unsure of. Might just be the difference between the 2.0d and the 3.0d.

Hi, re the fumes. I had that on my E53 2005 3l diesel and it was caused by a cracked exhaust manifold, which is a common problem on the 3l diesels with the steel exhaust manifold which came with the 500nm motors (from about 2003 - 2007/8, i think) What i did was to remove the manifold and have the cracks welded and the mating surface skimmed. Car is going fine now.Quite a mission to remove the manifold as you have to first remove the inlet manifold, injectors, boost pipe, etc., and then the tappet cover iirc. Then only can you get to the exhaust manifold. Not a pleasant job, but diy doable.

Hi, check for black soot residue in the engine bay area, might give you a indication for were the problem is coming from.

Some smoke in the mornings on a cold morning can just be condensation from the exhaust. I get it every now and again. Not too phased by it.
