I was of opinion that this bearing issue is just the natural aspirated M cars from e46 M upwards , but on Saturday I was at a friends workshop and there was a X6 M[twin turbo V8 ]with a bearing knock , they already done new turbos , then the knock , motor was stripped on the bench , needs new crank , when I enquired how much to repair , the parts-bill alone comes to r150 ooo , but this includes cautionary measures like new timing chain , spockets ,etc , and here I am waiting for the v8 m6's to become cheaper so I don't have to explain to everybody about the bearings is the reason why my cars are always idling for close on five minutes before I drive-off.

At what mileage and what mods? Bearing failures have not been common on the M5/6 even when modded. (that said people might not be talking about it)

X6M doesn't have quite the same motor, but either way a sample of one doesn't quite point to a widespread problem.

E36 also runs bearings

You idle your cars for 5 minutes......isn't is better to drive and keep the revs low until warmed up?

Yes it is better to drive around, so other components heat up as well, not just the engine

Exactly what I do

Peter explicitly told me, no over 4000 RPM until the car is warm.

I stick to under 4000 RPM and max throttle of 50% until the car is at 1/4 on the temp gauge (where 1/2 is warm), then allow up to 5000 and about 60% throttle, then when at 1/2 I rev till about 6500RPM maximum. in over a year I think I've seen over 7000 RPM on a handful of occasions.

I don't drive an M car, but I don't go above 2000rpm (maybe slightly higher) until I hit half way on the gauge.

Maybe, to be honest, in 3rd at 7000 it's scary enough!!!! Haha, I know the limits of my talent :p

Btw it’s actually better to drive off gently than to leave the car to idle when cold, as the oil warms up quicker.
