E60 Sound Install

Ok, So I am doing this myself.

Now, this is an ambitious project, I did have this at somebody else, but was not happy.

I refuse to give up my I-drive, to spite everybody telling me that its the only way. crap, I refuse, wont happen.

So first things first. I need inputs.

Slow process, but I am tapping a high input from each speaker.

I have also installed to each major speaker proper gauge wiring (the yellow cable that you can see)

THerefore 2 wires to each door

So I am running all inputs into this
AudioControl-LC6i-Line-Output-Converters__31h-SgYoJRL.jpg

OK, so taking all of the high inputs from the actual speaker outputs into the LC6i

I am then running 3 RCA's from the Line out into this.

I installed some 8" hertz space savers in the sub position under seats

I decided, for tunablity, and being able to run all speakers at the correct cross over point, that I am going to go for 3 seperate amps, all coming out of the EQX.

This is how I did power distribution,

Note the golden rule, Fuses as close to the battery terminal as possible, and with a decent distribution box

Sub box that is going in, but I am probably going to change the enclosure design.

k so this was one HELL of a job.

I installed over 30m of wiring from each speaker into the Audiocontrol LCR6.

Used speaker wire, which was maybe overkill, and I could have gotten away with twinflex only, but ya, I have issues.

Firstly, I installed everything to run in the cubby, this was a bad idea, there was no space, specially with the dension gateway.

THe LCR6 would fit, but it was a right royal mess, so I moved the LCR to fit under the rear seat, its a non heat emitting device., and I fused it in 2 places.

I installed heavy gauge wiring going to the doors. It is physically possible to install the wiring to the doors using the existing wiring loom, without having to make additional holes, its tricky but doable. No need to remove the door.

Remove the door tensioner so that the door can swing fully open, remove the 8mm bolt, pull the cover back. Using a draw wire, pull your wiring through.

Run the wiring so that it goes over the top of the existing plug, there IS space.

So my goal is SQ, for my front stage I have planned to run set of hertz 4" in the doors for hi, but get midrange by replacing the bass speakers under the seat with an 8", and just adjust accordingly. This turned out epically well.

On the doors, I installed an additional XOver that I had left from a previous install

Right, so my 3 amps are in

Audiobank (cant remember which) but a mofo of a monoblock, a 4x ROckford 551x and a 4 channel RA.

Did an amp rack under the shelf,

IMG-20130329-00907_zps3782dd43.jpg

WHat I did is I used the hi/low lines coming from the front speakers, and split them.

Ran the 4" in the doors to the 4xRA amp, and ran the 8" under the seat to the 551x in bridge mode for decent power.

Will finish rest of the write up later.. So to be continued.

K Continued

I tapped my 12v from behind the radio,as well as the CAN_H and CAN_L for the comfort seats.

this was then carried throughout to the back for the LCR6

So this is where all of the wiring comes together, ie all of the high inputs

IMG-20130401-00931_zps4291381e.jpg

Note that I still need to tidy this up.

Now I just want to go see if I can get a rear seat that folds down from a scrappy, and need a new backboard, cause mine got butchered with a port the size of your mom in.

but the general idea is this

IMG-20130402-00939_zps833e93d3.jpg

Those kickers go really really deep, did a 40hz test, could not hear a thing, but the car was shaking apart..

Will post of pics after I have neatened up the rear.

I do have a staging issue though, clarity is Chrystal, except that the tweeter is a bit loud, but can adjust that.

I will need a DSP for that monster front stage that I built, was first not going to put in the DQS as I relied on the cross overs of the standard system, and the fact that I had a multitude of amps with independent x over points, but I will have to put in the DSP... But only going to run the DSP on the 4 front speakers.

Just one note, I did not use the the hi/lo for the speakers under the seats to power the 8" hertz's I put in, as those are already x-overed for a much lower range, Instead I used the front speaker channel, and the original channel i used for the subs.

Now I look forward to the month of settings till i get her just right.

Most together my E60 has been in MONTHS

Note how gorgeous those comfort seats look, still need to code those as well...

And in December, Im removing the dash to go full wide screen nav, and install a factory hud.... Cant wait.

Damn you did one hell of a job there.

I have one question though. How did you get the amp rack onto the bottom of the parcel shelf?

The amp rack at the bottom was secured with long screws, through the top and back, with amps mounted already, so long screws, 2 people, and one gym session.... = mounted.

But quite frankly this was a kak idea, wires in the way bla bla bla

And further, it sounds crap....

Well, not terrible, and a lot better then stock, but alas.... not tear inducing standard. I took first place for SQ in a scoob in 2003 or somewhere, and I ache to hear that sound again...

Therefore, I have actually JUST booked the car in at my master sound builder, opening the wallet, shut the fsck up, and let rob just build this thing...

Will update you guys...

Bit of research says that ground-zero makes the best split system for the E60...
