Have a 2006 530d E60, and the front loader and shuttle refuses to play mp3s. I'm a bit confused, aren't all bmw models from 2004 upwards suppose play mp3s?

Hey Sash, it plays normal audio cd's but as soon as I put an mp3 cd in, it says meduim cannot be read. Weird right?:thumbdo:

Hey Kish, yeah it does have Idrive, I hope its not the software thing! I know the F10 has idrive but it plays mp3s, but than again I must double check that it does as I just load songs on the hard drive.

But my car looks exactly like the pic in your signature Sash  mines its just a 2006 530d msport

Your's is Pre-LCI so it is available as a retrofit by BMW, or alternatively if you know someone with a OBD cable and NSC Expert you can have it enabled. Will only work on the front loader. MP3 shuttle support only came after 2007.

The retrofit from BMW also comes with a full software update so you will lose your car for a day and they will charge you in the region of R1k for it.

It is also worth mentioning that MP3 support is not availble on iDrive M-Ask (non-nav or nav business). It is only available on iDrive CCC (nav professional) or later.

If you can PM me the last 7 digits of your vin I will check for you :)

We had an 08 530d M sport that played mp3s, and that Idrive had no nav.

This is just annoying :argh:

These are the docs from BMW. In short:

An E60 of model year 06 and newer with M-ASK can have MP3 support. Before then the M-Ask hardware was not able to decode MP3. This would account for a 2008 model without Nav being able to support MP3.

That being said my E64 is a model year 05 but it was built prior to 03/05 listed in the docs and I have full mp3 support. I guess the only way to know for sure is to hook the car up to NSC Expert and check the coding.

Thanks dude, when I send it back to BMW for the shuffle noise, I will ask them if it qualifies about the retrofit software thingy :ty:

So my car had an oil leak, decided to book it one time for the radio software upgrade and they said my radio cant have the software update that plays mp3s :thumbdo:

I still say we should connect it to NCSexpert and check the coding. If you dredge through the forums online you will find that it's a 50/50 chance since there are some people with MAsk who have MP3 support, and others who don't.

Put up some pics of you car some time ;-)
