E60 550i V8

I am looking to buy an E60 550i from a BMW dealership - 2009 model with low mileage. I am unsure whether it has the 4.4L of 4.8L V8? I heard the 4.8L has problems with smoke due to Valve stem seals? Any advice or stuff I must be wary of

Check that the cooling system is in good nick - there's a well-known issue with a coolant pipe that's in a stupid place. Check for oil leaks and make sure they start it from cold so you can hear any weird noises.
The 550i is a later N62 and so isn't prone to most of the flaws of the 545i. And an 09 should be an LCI, which is nicer than the pre-facelift. Obviously check that all the gadgets work and that it's running the most up to date software.

Thanks a lot - I am considering looking at downpiping and a DTE chip to boost the economy a bit - any inputs?

If u looking to boost economy, maybe the 550i isn't the right car to buy:cartel:

That is absolutely true, but apparently the downpiping frees up the engine a bit so it doesn't have to work so hard to push exhaust fumes out, which adds a bit of economy, and in this current economy nobody should say 'no' to any additional mileage you can get on a tank. . . . .am I wrong?

Hi,

I Own a 2005 545i with 95000km, up to this mileage I had no problems other then Alternator replacement on 70000km.

On open road car is using between 9 and 10L/100km, speeds between 120 and 140km/h.

Check if I drive works smoothly and does not freeze.

Now I will replace my water pump and thermostat as a preventive maintenance.

Great cars, I can just imagine 550i being even better.

Good luck

Alex

Wrong car to buy if you worried about economy.

What does down piping entail in a N/A Car?

This...??

To my knowledge it's just removing the CAT's and replacing them with a piece of straight pipe.

Usually makes a nice difference in sound and helps performance and economy slightly if the fueling is corrected using a piggy back system or a remap.

We usually refer to the removal of CATs as a De-cat. Should add a nice deep tone. It will only improve economy on higher mileage cars where the cats are blocked.

Downpipes are used in FI (forced induction/turbo) cars. Usually also contains a CAT and runs with a turbo setup.
