E60 530i

Hi Everyone,

I recently purchased a 2007 530i m sport that was advertised on the forum. A little back story, against all advice i still paid more than retail on this car as it was in really good condition, at the time of purchasing it had 118k on the clock, few items had been done by the previous owner like bonnet shocks, belt tentioners, valve cover gasket, plugs, gearbox oil, sleeve and gasket but not the filter.

In the short 3 weeks or so of ownership i first took the car to zf to be checked out, their report said the clutch packs etc are all in good condition and the oil was indeed new, they advised to come back in 30k to do the service and change the filter.. im still uneasy on this one and will most likely do it much sooner.

Thereafter i did all four discs (meyle) and pads (trw) sensors from bmw, Brake fluid flush (fluid bmw), oil and filter(bmw), airfilter (meyle), cabin filter (goldwagen) Imcomex sold me liqui moly fluid as the chf replacement for the ps which im yet to do as im still looking for advice if its safe to use.

Where i stand now, my dad used the car to dbn this past week and had a consumption of 8.0 at halfway and 7.6 at destination given that he was always below the speed limit. However driving shorter distances the needle really moves abit too fast for driving conditions.. considering getting the air filter from bmw to see if that helps as i did have a similar consumption issue on another car due to running no filter at all for a short distance.. i could be wrong though.

Next would be the ps fluid change, car takes chf fluid, would the liqui moly be safe as it does state chf replacement? Or should i just find the green chf can?

Il leave off there for the moment.

This is my first bmw coming from a history of fords so im used to diy most of my service items, although advice from you guys with experience will always be a massive helping hand. Il update this thread as i progress on the car.

Congrats man, good looking machine that

Not sure if it's special enough to demand a premium, might be worth it if you plan on keeping the vehicle for a long time. Regardless though, your happiness is what's important.

The fuel consumption numbers provided seems reasonable for the 30i, what are you finding it to be in town? Just keep in mind, its a auto and a rather large / heavy vehicle, so its not going to be too kind in town.

Install OE air filter, clean mass airflow sensor, remove cats.... this will aid your consumption, unless of course there is an actual issue which needs resolve.

Yea look, private sales demand the price of the current owner.
For the money you paid i think you got a really great car, you'll have a hard time trying to find one that is that clean.

As for the consumption, i think its on par with the NA engine and how big it is + living in JHB.

Enjoy the car man, i wanted to buy this one REALLY badly.

Personally I dont think theres much wrong with your consumption.

Its a 1.6 ton + car with a N/A 3.0 6 Cylinder. Its never going to be very efficient in town. The open road consumption seems to be on par with what it should be. Actually quite good imho.

Also I have a follow up question. Are you driving this car with no filter in it?

I am assuming he has the Meyle air filter in (from his write up) and is hoping a change to a OEM BMW air filter, will help his consumption..

Ah yes this might be true. OP will find there is no difference as the OE BMW filter is more than likely Meyle

Nope you are wasting money.

Open road my 525 M54 sits low 8's at a steady 130 on CC on mostly flat roads, in town it's a horror show, sitting between 11 to 14.

If you insist on changing something in the hopes of improving economy the MAF is where you start.

The last filter i bought from BMW was a Mann and Imcomex stocks Mann filters, guess where im buying my next air filter.

If i learnt anything about these are cars ( ZF gearboxes and probably combination of motor) is that they are built around the driver. An example, my cars give a different figure for when my wife drives the same road at similar speeds (N3 to Durban and back). In fact she will only get similar consumption if she drives a little slower than i do (limit +10%)

So while I don't think that the consumption that your Dad achieved was bad, after driving the car more, you will adapt your driving style when you learn where the car is more comfortable.

To put a spanner in the works, I have achieved the best consumption on my dads C200, and on the same trip, his driving style sees him about 0.5l per 100 heavier. I ensured tyres are pumped correctly, alignment still in spec, checked where the sweet spot of the car was and did the trip.

I assume the consumption is 8l/100kms and 7.6l/100kms. That is very good for the car it being petrol and auto[/b]. To give you a comparison, i drove from Kempton to Durban in September with my 2005 530d six speed manual sticking strictly to the speed limits (120 at 120, gps speed) and i got 18,1kms/l which translates to 5.52l/100kms but it was a very nice wind still day with little traffic going down and i was alone as well. On my trip of about 4500kms i got 16.1km/l overall. BUT, the diesel is quite a bit lighter on diesel than the equivalent petrol engined car. Just enjoy the car, it seems to be in excellent condition (btw., i bought the tires that came off that car just after the previous owner bought the car a few years back)

not sure i can support your current or future posts...i was about 2weeks away from buying this beauty , so in essence i feel you actually sorta stole this car from me.

i drooled over this car for hours but just couldnt get finances right in time.

but those figures seems quite OK , my 330i gets similar numbers , and is considerably lighter than yours.

Welcome to the e60 clan. :bravo:
Very clean car that. Consumption for the petrol version is pretty good. As been mentioned, it will adapt to driving style and you will probably find sticking at a slightly higher speed 125 - 130 you may get better consumption as the car does not have to "labour" (excuse the term - its not actually struggling :=): ) on hills. I find that even with my diesel it gets better consumption at those sort of speeds than at 120.

Congrats though on a very good find.
